Why does my laptop go to sleep when i close the screen cover?

Why does my laptop sleep when I close the screen? It didn't happen before, but suddenly it just shuts down and it's so annoying. When I close the cover on my HP, the power light on the side is supposed to blink continuously when i want to use my laptop again, but it doesn't, and to get my laptop to work again I have to long-press the power button. When I do so, all the data goes from the laptop.

Hello and welcome to Windows Central.

The behavior depends on the settings that are currently set for your laptop. Just go to your start menu and type "lid", then click on "Change what closing the lid does". In the page that opens, you should be able to change what happens whenever you close the lid of your laptop; the options usually are: shut down, sleep, hibernate, nothing.

The laptop isn't sleeping, its shutting down entirely.

Sleep is that blinking power button state.

Make sure all updates are installed, you may have to install the proper graphics/chipset drivers if updates don't help. What model is the laptop?
