On my Surface pro 4 the touch screen freaks out when lid is closed after a while. Removing the keyboard and ensuring that nothing is touching the screen seems to make it stop.

My issue, is that I frequently use my Surface with a monitor/keyboard/mouse.

I've had the same issue and I found the solution here: answers.microsoft(dot)com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpro-surfdevice/close-surface-pro-with-external-monitor/4ecb82a7-2e69-430b-b668-344ea8e1aa3b

Simply press windows key + p and select the 'second screen only' option. Even if you have multiple monitors (I have 3), it will disable just the Surface screen. Hope that helps.
