Hotmail sync on Nokia Lumia 520

It seems that there is no option to manually update emails as there is, for example, if you have a Gmail account configured. Any idea why, just trying to be frugal with my data allowance. Thanks in advance.

Use the 'Daily' option. That is good enough to keep your data usage in check.

Go to "email + accounts" in "settings", tap on the account you want to change, change "Download new content" to "manually".
Now your email will not sync until you hit the refresh button. Hope it helps.

Yes but why is there no manual option for Hotmail whereas there is for Gmail?

For the Microsoft account, under settings uncheck email. Now add a new imap email w/ your hotmail id, it should give you manual sync option.
