Got a strange SMS message just now

had a notification of a service message
then i check my messages and saw this

"Win 500 Now! Click to Play
    http:// win 500 eachmonth.m2ergo.com/?xid=*****"
(change the final few letters as incase its to recognise my phone number
and added space incase people click it)

    and its a read-only message

now im quite sure this is spam text
but they could mask the text as a service message??
    and make it read only??

    BTW
    im on Vodafone UK
    LG optimus 7

I think SMS spamming is going to get real big in the near future. I've had a few on my phone recently.

I kind of think the opposite.

From what I understand bulk text messaging is a very controlled and expensive market to get into. If the number comes from a 5 digit number, there's an agreement with the carrier for this service. In the US the user needs to be able to unsubscribe by replying back "STOP". Any abuse from the number revokes their texting privilages on the entire network.

Since bulk messaging is so expensive numbers are often shared between multiple services. That's why you had to text "HAITI" to 90999. If you texted "PIZZA" you may have subscribed to another service.

There was also a controvery a while back because a free bulk service was being abused by spammers. There were legitimate services using that number, but the spammers ended up getting it suspended. I'm not sure if it was a permanent shutdown or temporary.

That text message looks like one of the rouge spammer texts.
