1020 + Straight Talk - randomly loses internet ability + crash (not on wifi) from place to place

Has anyone else ran into this? I got the BYOD sim card (micro att) and am on straight talk, now for about 6 months.. mostly with no issues.. for internet apn i simply have tfdata as the apn and nothing else.

I'll have it on the LTE or 4G working fine in one location, travel across town a few miles (good signal etc), then suddenly there is no internet connection, no ip is received etc..

So to remedy i thought i'd try toggling the airplane mode.. after trying to toggle back on the phone crashes/reboots.. then the internet is fine again.

Side note.. i get very good throughput on LTE with a strong signal... roughly as high as 42 Mbps on the download and 8+ on the upload.

This is on 8.1

Anyone have any thoughts?

I should also add, there doesnt seem to be a specific region in town where this occurs.. it can be completely random and with a strong signal in any case.
