640 or hang onto my aging 920?

I'm wondering if the 640 might be an acceptable, temporary replacement for my 920. At the $150 price I could buy off contract and wait for the promised flagship this fall. While the specs are definitely low/mid range for current hardware how do they stack up to the 920 that's almost 3 years old.

I think you answered your own question :p You can't beat the price and you get a refreshed phone, with 1gb that has almost everything the 920 has, but gives you the SD option..

I don't remember them mentioning wireless charging tho

I'm going to keep using my Lumia 920 until the Lumia 940 (assuming that's the name) comes out. Sure, the 930 is there, but my 920 hasn't failed me yet, so yeah.

My 920 is hanging in there but it's getting a little laggy and the battery is really showing its age.

I have the same problem with my 820 which has the same internals with 920 but still mine is perfectly smooth compared to 2-3 year old android or iphone, that's why although I really want to upgrade I'll wait for a flagship

Good topic! I had the same question! Nokia 920 is still one of the best windows phones made ever, but the battery is pretty weak and the old processor is often getting warm. Also the device is heavy and thick.
On the other hand I do like the simple design of the 6xx series. Have to see the price...

How strange! My Nokia 920 is not laggy at all! Works perfectly.

Dr. xandros9 prescribes:

a hard reset
a battery replacement

I don't think a battery replacement should cost much if you DIY, and a hard reset oughta clear up performance issues. (you'll be starting fresh if you get a new phone anyway)

Thinking of retiring my 925 which saddens me if the 640 (or higher) fills the bill.
I'll just need internet sharing and Wi-Fi calling.

I don't really want a jeweled glistening high end phone for my gadget addiction.
This depends on the price of the proposed top end Lumia however.

To answer:
It's a tough choice.
If the OP can hang onto the 920 in addition to...I would say jump on the 640 since the investment would be minimal.

Minimal and will prove a market for Windows phone yet! I'd purchase it if it comes to my carrier but Verizon doesn't care about us.

Your battery has, most likely, simply lost capacity. All lithium's do over time.
Just replace the battery.
Three screws and about a 10 min job.

This is a great phone to see you through until a few months AFTER the flagship is released - I.e. when the release sticker shock has passed and the price is better.

Of course if the Flashship is so amazing you have to buy it on day one you still can :)

If it's a temporary replacement then go for the 640. I have a L925 and I too have been considering this as a temp. phone because my L925 has poor battery life plus I really need that dual SIM capability so I don't have to tote two phones. I do hope we get dual-SIMS on flagship phones.

I'd definitely keep the 920 over a 640, and even a 640 XL. The 640's SoC is inferior (comparable CPU, significantly inferior GPU), the display is worse (in terms of resolution and pixel density), you lose OIS (and a little camera resolution), and wireless charging goes out the window. The only thing the 640 has on the 920 is SensorCore, and maybe battery life. It makes a lot more sense to wait the extra 3-6 months for a new flagship.
