640 XL Hard Reset through settings menu; progress bar fills, then 'sad' face?

Hi- after my week old 640 xl kept switching on/off on its own, I went through the settings/about/reset my phone, seemed to be working on it with the cogs icons, but when the progress bar appears it races through the last half and a 'sad' (fail)? face appears...
If I try to switch it back on afterwards, it simply goes through the same thing again- any ideas? Bought as a gift for my wife, too...

Yes, vipme- gave up eventually, went to microsoft support, downloaded their recovery tools and that brings up the home screen at least... However, it now has that awful 'restart' habit affecting some 640 xl's and switches off every few minutes before restarting!
Tried support again, but phone says updates are 'up to date' and it won't stay switched on long enough for the 'stop/restart' app cure to work- frustrating or what?

Just tried a 'soft reset' and at least it's stopped switching off/restarting, so must be getting somewhere with it- fingers crossed (",)!
