According to Thurrott on WP 8.1, this is it.

For me it's Ok until now... There is no problem here with my Lumia 920 and WP8.1. No bugs and my battery is normal after the second update. Of course there are many new features to bring to OS, but for now is OK.
Let's wait untill next update (WP8.2 or WP9).

RT isn't dead, it's just going to be merged with WP which makes perfect sense.

iOS was released against WM6.0 which was clearly no competition. It took MS to way too long to react with something mildly competitive (WP7). The last couple years MS has done a lot of work to catch up and set themselves up to be more competitive in the future. With a mild amount of success and a decent amount of hate. Once they complete the transition to a consolidated core OS that's adaptable to any device. They should be able to react as quickly or quicker than Apple/Google.

Hi, I'm new to the forums here, but not to WPC.

I just wanted to comment on 8.1 to say yes, 8.1 is feature complete. Now as for the rumored update in the fall and what follows next year... who knows,

Looks like they are going to be doing it, way after Apple and Google. The problem is that WP has been in the market for almost 4 years and just now they finally add catch up features and still they haven't come close enough to do handoff like iOS is now able to do even though they had it set up WAY before iOS did. They are being slow. That does not help them be anymore competitive. Not to belittle what they have done, but being slow as they are is not driving growth where they need it which is the high end market.

Without developers you cant react to ****. Most if not all of Androids features and development comes from outside of google (the modders and cookers on xda) this is why Apple is stagnant and has to copy from android because just like IOS Windows is locked down like a bad cramp. I'm sorry but Microsoft has hardware to add features to the os yet here we are a year and a half into WP 8 and we get what a notification center a battery stats app and a half assed file manager?? Sorry but tell it to the investors and the bank if 4% market share is going to cut it for much longer.

Bottom line MS needs to bring it and soon or they will be sitting next to RIM on the pity train.

Windows Phone 7 & the (perceived) lack of apps might have been the undoing of Windows Phone. The early adopters (influencers) jumped in at WinPhone 7 & said nice, but lacks features. Then a reboot - WinPhone8 (no WinPhone 7 support) & still behind. Those old notions are hard to shake, when people try Windows Phone, they usually like it.

Has WinPhone 8.1 caught up ? ALMOST, but not entirely there. Functionality needs to be added. WinPhone 8.1 has moved faster (to catchup) than Android & iOS have innovated, but that's not good enough. Eventually, (WinPhone 8.1 GDR2 ??) the top three OSs will be about equal, feature / functionality wise, but WinPhone 9 MUST bring the next big thing ! ... and get the hot apps, sooner rather than later. If MS has to pay DEVs, then so be it, to try to enhance the big picture..

People's perception of WinPhone needs to change, lots of blowhards mis-stating the negatives of WinPhone, because they tried it a year ago. The marketing people need to step up, sometimes KISS is better. As I've stated before, put a thoughtfully crafted WinPhone 8.1 Start screen on an ad (screen or print). Demo the newest iteration, just show what it can do, NO words spoken. Then background with Windows Phone 8.1 lettered in the foreground, followed by We've changed for the Better.

Because, appearances DO sell phones - people want a thing of beauty (that happens to be functional).

No they do not. If that was the case HTC and Nokia wouldn't have near death throes. Samsung continues to do well, while everyone calls their devices ugly, that speaks volumes of how much appearance matters to consumers.

This is exactly the reason I'm hesitant to recommend WP to people. It's missing several big name apps & games. The big names it does have are generally incomplete when compared to Android & iOS. That's what's killing the OS. People who are new to smart phones will be fine but anyone already invested in Android/iOS are going to be disappointed when they can't download the new hotness.

I think that 8.1 has the all the right features for most users now they just need to get the Apps to match.

I like WP/Nokia, the battery life the speed is nice that's what I like, I also like android. WP has huge potential but falls well short in terms of features basic features (copy and paste) is just one on WP that is almost useless.
People say WP has come a long way in short time or faster than android?? WP is just now getting a very few things that Android had from day one!!! Am I saying copy android? No not at all but damn let me copy a number from a text message (not the whole fing message)or dialer so I can google it!

It is supposed to be quick and fast. It's adapt or die in the smartphone market. Being slow hurts your platform not help. We don't even know when 8.1 will go OTA for carriers in the U.S. I know how everyone is all fine with the DP now, but I remember how everyone had a LOT of problems at first. Battery drain to lag to freezes.

If there's one thing you can say about the WP division is they word hard and fast. When you think about the amount of features developed since WP7 hit the market, it's int he thousands. Not even iOS/Android have had this pace in the last 3+ years.

Wow, you're a real brainiac, pointing out that MS needs to not be SLOW! I'm sure they didn't know that!

Well obviously it's not fast enough. They have slowed down in the last year or so and just now adding crucial features in WP8.1, a year and half later after WP8. So yes calling them slow is very accurate.

I must add a caveat. Appearances seem to matter only to iOS users - note the cold shoulder given to the 5C. As for Samsung, it's not so much that they're ugly, it's the cheapness their abundance of plastic exudes.

I actually don't get a feeling of cheapness from their phones. Phones have been plastic for years now all of sudden it's not good enough?

I just been looking at the list of Lumia phones available and i see no reason to upgrade either, there is no killer must have feature on high end phones, the bigger camera is nice but a killer feature no, i think my phone is the sweet spot of Lumias, perfect size 4.3", great battery life, no issues with 8.1, upgradeable memory with SD space and with thanks to the Os its snappy and never lags ... if we stay at 8.?? forever, i`m happy

If only iPhone users thought this way.

I have owned several samsungs and they always felt like cheaply made toys. Unfortunately that is common these days, but I prefer a solid feeling phone even I it ways slightly more. Its not like I have carpal tunnel that prevents me from holding a phone that weighs a couple more grams (sorry poking fun at reviews that hold light weight as the holy grail in phones).

Samsungs are cheap yet they sell millions because they have a lot of things people want. Look at LG, 3 years ago no one would touch them now they make the one of the best phones money can buy, why? Because they listen to what people want and innovate. LG in the next year will knock sammy off the top spot.

Not in sales. Lol. I like the G2 and G3, but they wont pass Samsung in a year. No way. Samsung's marketing is too good, and they happen to make good products as well, even if some think they feel cheap (I do).

When compared to an HTC or an iPhone, yes they do look cheap. Notice I said "look". Even Nokias with their fancy appearance look plasticky to me. But that's just my personal preference.
