Battery life with WP 8.1

My 1020 was horrible the first couple of days until I set my battery saver to only apps I actually use in the background and the data limit on data sense. After those two things I'm back to the same as it was post update

IE seems to be the biggest battery hog according to the battery saver usage data, and even after some use you will notice the battery drain quite extensively. The other day I had my phone plugged into a USB port to charge, and I was browsing at the same time. To my surprise the phone gave me the low battery warning! Somehow IE's battery use was greater than the charge rate. I'm sure it was charging and that my USB port was not defective as I was transferring files earlier without problems.

Also, my 920 seems to take a lot longer to charge compared to the past, whether it is plugged in or on the wireless charging pad.

The heat from the phone now is also getting a little concerning. The 920 has had some heat issues before but I don't remember my 920 ever getting this hot in the past with so little usage.

IE tops the list on mine, too, followed fairly distantly by Facebook. It feels weird/sad to say this, but there is no way that I spend more time using IE than Facebook. I disabled the background agent for IE last week.

520 here, battery drain too obvious with the 8.1 preview, maybe that's the price you pay for all the new features.. Anyways hoping Lumia cyan update fixes these issues..

Have you tried enabling USB setings to display If the lower powered charger is causing delayed charging? Search USB in Cortana swipe to the phone tab and click on the usb setting search result (it's a hidden app).. In the app tick mark both the options, hopefully the problem behind delayed charging turns out the charger (bcoz its easy to buy new charger rather than giving away your device to Nokia for a week.)

Hello,

So we really do not have that "smoking gun" yet when it comes to that one thing causing the battery drain for most of us?

Hopefully we will soon...

Seeing as 8.1 devices will be fully optimized for 8.1, hardware firmware and all, they should almost definitely perform much better than current devices. Current devices should also improve in regards to battery life once they get updated firmware.

This is what i presume but you would think with 8.1 available (developer ver but still...) a lot of what caused battery drain would be tackled by now. My concern is the draining carrying over without a thought on MS/Nokia/OEM's part. I have my fingers crossed that the WP8.1 optimized devices finally stop most of the random/aggressive battery drain. It's also sad to hear Cortana is a battery hog, you would think it was optimized with the OS install to idle properly and limit resources. I love WP and i want to come back BADLY...but the battery drain is a problem that should be fixed, even before adding tons of new features (my 2 cents).

For people saying IE11 is the battery hog, i'd recommend limiting the tabs to a max of 1...when i had WP8, having only 1 tab helped fix some draining.

I have a 920 and updated yesterday to WP 8.1. I saw the same regarding my battery. It was draining very fast. Turned off everything in the battery saver but still it was draining fast. Then I noticed my google imap account was constantly syncing. Then I deleted the google account and now I have the same good battery life as before the update if not a little better. So try delete your imap mail account (in my case google mail) and see if that helps.

I did not have the subtantial drains reported here on my Lumia 1020, but initially battery life was worse, even about a week after installing 8.1. I lost about four hours of usage per day. Most suggestions in this thread made no sense to me, but I did check into the Google account sync issues, et voila: one account was stuck in sync. Deleted all Google accounts (after turning on flight mode, to get them out of sync mode, otherwise you can't delete them) and then re-added them. Since I don't need push notifications for those accounts, I set them to check every hour. Since then, battery life is a good as before, perhaps even a little better.

This is great, because I'm enjoying 8.1 a lot, especially the swipe keyboard. I used Swype on my android device for two years and I'm impressed how well Microsoft has done in its first attempt.

My L925 battery has gotten so bad it's driving me insane. In top of that it keeps freezing now!!

IE 11 is definitely buggy. Today it was hanging at times. One time it relaunched some tabs that I had closed before instead of just launching a new tab. It continues to suck down power more than most things on the phone. I hope MS is aware of this issue and is working to find out what IE is doing and fixing it.

With the battery drain issue being so rampant, is it possible a fix will be pushed out before the official release? Is it most likely firmware that can only be fixed by Nokia, or can MS do anything with an update?

I found simple settings that help improves battery life...1st stop background apps that is not impt...then set your mail interval to every 30 mins or 1 hour and u will see the diff in your battery life...good luck...iam getting good battery in my lumia 1020

Well.. Lemme also add here. L920 - Post 8.1 update hard reset my phone (since I did not mind it)... The first week the battery was edgy and not that great.. Have Whatsapp, Insider, Battery saver running the background.
Today disabled Insider and have used my phone heavily 1 + Hrs of phone calls, whatsapp, gmail sync every hour, lil bit of FB, Twitter , Weave and I am at 59% and phone has been off the charger for 9 hrs.. Must say its not bad, considering whatsapp in background drains battery like hell.. but guys disable any battery app that you may have and pls do report back if it made any change...
Games -- Nah Nah WP8.1 + L920 does not seem to be optimized for games... Heats & drains like crazy.. Owned this 920 since July'13

After doing a hard reset my 925 feels fast than it ever did before. Battery had gotten a little better but almost all bugs are gone. Do a hard reset

Just before fail safe kicks in and turn off your phone to prevent destroying the battery, turn plane mode on.. let phone turn off, and charge it leaving plane mode turn on (it will remember the setting) it should help.
Also disable sending your words (from voice controlling your phone) to MS, along with sending to ms, how you using your keyboard. You can also turn sync off, unless you using it.
Also you should turn off auto update of your apps, and set WiFi to not auto turn on after 1h (it is stock setting)

Want to share my experience. After 8.1 update my battery life was completely unacceptable. I was willing to turn off Cortana and automatic app update. Then I noticed when I was in email that the Gmail account was always syncing, never seemed to stop. At the same time word came out about outlook.com being able to be used for other email accounts. I set this up for my Gmail and an old yahoo account, deleted those from my phone and now my battery life is pretty much back to the way it was pre-8.1. I'm willing to venture that those who aren't having battery problems don't sync a Gmail account on their phones. Worth a shot anyway.

I love the update. Many great features. Now I can use my phone all day again.

Hi,

I updated my Lumina 1520 2 days ago with 8.1 and so far I am really pleased with the battery life.
Up to now up I recognize no shorter battery life than with 8.0.
I really love 8.1 :excited:
