Does anyone know of a fix for this that does not involve replacing the camera module? Perhaps opening the existing module and fixing whatever it is inside that's at fault?

the camera module is very small and I doubt you would be able to repair using ordinary tools. It has 6 lenses in a space less than 5mm wide. Best to replace it if you can

its better to replace the whole module rather than taking the module apart

Opening the existing module and trying to fix it is a recipe for disaster. Your best bet is to buy a new one from Ebay which costs around $50-$60 and using that as a replacement.

I can see that I shall have to be a camera repair trailblazer.
