Problems with dual monitor setup

I recently upgraded to windows 10. I have a laptop and a big monitor that I connect with an HDMI cable to set up dual monitor display. Everything was working fine until randomly, a few weeks ago, the set up stopped working. Now when I plug in HDMI, laptop completely blacks out and the external monitor becomes the only display. I have no idea how to fix this. HELP, PLEASE!
