Noticed the option, and surprisingly the hella mid ranged 820 had NFC... But I don't know the slightest thing about actually using it.

What components are missing that would stop us from using tap to pay (if any)?

Actually untrue. So in Windows Phone 8.0, they implemented Wallet, which was supposed to allow for carrier-sanctioned NFC payments. That unfortunately never came to pass other than a few small markets worldwide. In WP 8.1, they've pulled out any functionality for NFC payments from the Wallet app itself. This way, carriers can make their own app that controls this sort of stuff. My guess is that's a concession to the group formerly known as Isis, which involves T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon for the US markets. Still, nothing has panned out yet.

That's interesting. Google, with KitKat, did the opposite. They designed Google Wallet so the carriers could not block its tap-to-pay feature. Prior to that, carriers could block that feature in Google Wallet and make ISIS the only option.
