It appears there could be a number of reasons why you may not be able to edit it on your phone. According to Microsoft, an Excel file will stay in Read Only mode on your phone if it has any of the following:

  • Functions that aren't supported on the phone. For info about which Excel functions are supported, see the Microsoft Support article about supported content in Excel Mobile.
  • Data validation in one or more cells.
  • Array formulas.
  • Data tables.
  • Slicers.
  • Macros enabled.
  • Large column or row widths.
  • Formulas that contain links or references to other workbooks.
  • Formulas with structured references.
  • Formulas that contain references, content, or formatting beyond cell IV16384.
  • Formulas that are longer than 512 characters or have more than 30 arguments in them.
  • Tracked changes.
  • Dialog sheets.
  • XML markup that isn't formed correctly.
  • OLE objects or ActiveX controls.

Dear, I read somewhere that to edit an excel document in windows phone you must have Windows Live ID. So try that. If this don't apply then there might be any other problem..

This happens because of the macros which u had use in excel file bcoz of that it shows can't edit workbook........no solution for that bcoz microsoft doesn't provide support for it same like for password protection file also......so i think they should work on both this think

I was editing the same document in Windows 8 without any issues. Upgraded to 8.1 and now it says can't edit workbook. I opened it from OneDrive, still same. I'm using windows mobile only for office installed in it. Now I don't have any reasons for using this mobile anymore unless and until they fix this mighty horrible bug soon.

Excel on Windows Phone is probably one of the biggest jokes in mobile history.

Can you even copy/paste multiple cells?

People working with it at Microsoft are probably on crack or something. It's insane that in the obvious functions like here, where they could easily outshine iOS and Android by making the WP experience amazing, they make something that makes me want to change platform.

They are bunch of idiots if you ask me.

If you could edit an Excel document before the 8.1 upgrade but can't now, open the doc in a PC and save it as an excel, not an excel 03 or 07 or whatever. I did this and it unlocked the document and I can now edit it on my phone.

It's probably in Protection Mode and (I assume) it can't be unlocked on phone. Download same file on PC, open, unlock it (it will show on top if its protected), Save to OneDrive. Open it on your phone from OneDrive, now you should be able to edit

Microsoft claims you can work on office documents. If you look at the large number of restrictions this has, then their claim is basically a BLATANT LIE. I recommend you throw away this phone if you need to work on your work or office stuff.

I'm going to take a different approach. I think you have lived in darkness too long. It's time you saw the light. I would highly suggest you buy a used WP phone, something in the mid range of price and capability. The exact model will be determined by your carrier supports.

It's been stated that all LUMIA phones will be able to upgrade to Win 10. Using this phone with WP 8 or whatever it has on it will allow you to get familiar with WP's and the OS. If you like WP at the level it is now, you will only like it more on WP 10. If you don't like it now, sell the phone and go about your business. You will have learned something new which is always good and the expenditure won't break the bank.

Your decision but I offer this for your consideration.

By the way, this site is the absolute best source of help and information on WP phones. We have sister sites that offer good support on Android and IOS phones as well.

The office app is very limited coz it's inside the OS.. They can't update it because then they'll need to update the whole OS..the light in the end of the tunnel is that in win10 they'll be able to update it way more often and probably it will be better then Ios and Android
