Connect to 3G or 4G only....

well hamza i'm also facing this problem..i'm in the overage of 3G networ i turned on 3G option (highest speed connection) but still showing edge E on left corner..i also read too many forums many people are facing this problem...i'm stuck on 2G due to weak signal strength of 3G.my friends are enjoying 3G on android..very disappointing for us WP users..
i think MS should read our opinions and add options like 2g only/3g only/2g+3g (like in android)...waiting for update of 8.1 hope it may fix

Things like this really irritating ms & Nokia taking to correct this... In my house i am getting 2 bars of 3g signal with other phones but due to this problem i am not able to use 3g...😠😠😠 ..,even in wp 8.1 start toggle option also there is also no mobile data option only wifi😠😠...this is too much for Indians 😓

My problem is reverse.
Мy AT&T Lumia 920 always force 4G. Even if I select 3G via Field Test settings I don't get 3G sign on the status bar.
Maybe it's problem because I don't live in USA.

This 3G/2G thing is really turning out to be a nightmare.Ive joined work a few days back and it involves a lot of traveling and internet use. And when its like real urgent to have 3G ,my phones happily sitting on 2G when i know that 3G is actually available at that location. I can't check-in to places which are a little indoors because I'm on 2G, I cant use Cortana because its dancing between 2G/3G. In short,a great camera, build quality etc etc is all put down by the lack of a 3G lock in front of droids or iphones. This issue needs serious attention by Microsoft :\

The field test enables to lock the phone on to 3G, 2G or 4G.

Yeah and the field test doesn't work since Amber update !
Works for my Lumia 1020 with Cyan. Just tested today. I have a 3G package, but my phone would always drop to 2G inside my University corridors/buildings due to weak 3G signal. I locked it to 3G using the field test and now I never fall back to 2G... :) I get a weak 3G signal but that's still more useable than a near-full 2G signal.

Well thats wierd then....................afaik, i've not seen anyone with the Cyan update, as a matter of fact anyone post amber update being able to lock their phones to 3G with field test code. Could you please attach a screenshot of the procedure you follow plus a screenshot of your extras+info.

Here you go:
I didn't know that I could lock my phone to 3G. I came to this thread and only then I came to know about the field test. I dialled ##3282# in the dialler and this came up:

I accepted, opened ellipsis menu at the bottom:

Tapped on settings:

Here, when I first opened the menu, the 'Network type' was 'automatic' and there was no 'UTMS band' setting available.
OK, so I selected '3G only' from this:

And then backed out from the field test app using the 🔙 button. Next, when I was at University the next day, the signal never dropped to 2G where it always did... :)
And BTW, if it is relevant, I've selected '3G' as my highest connection speed:

And here is my phone info:

And yes, I'm on the latest 'critical' preview build on my Lumia 1020 UAE CV.

Wow, lucky you man, maybe it has to do something with your Rom :p It simply doesnt work after Amber update over here and many places ive read.

Another quick test:
Today, I saw that I was getting very weak 3G signals at my home. So I decided to test out the field test application again.
OK, so I went to field test and network was set to 3G only. See the top left: ZONG H (ZONG is my telecom operator and H means HSDPA or 3.5G)

Next, I set it to automatic, then my signal dropped for a few seconds and when it was back, I was on the stronger 2G signal. Again, at the top left: I have ZONG E (for EDGE or 2.75G)

And when I set it back to 3G only, I got my weaker 3G (HSDPA) signal back. So yes, it works perfectly. :)
