Cortana - does changing region affect the phone carriers?

So I'm in NZ and don't have Cortana compatibility in this region. I changed it the the US region as well as the language (English us). This allowed me to turn on cortana beta for my phone and it works properly. The question is, does living here in NZ with a factory NZ region changed to a US region (from settings) affect the my phone and its carrier here in any way?

The only ways it's affected mine in Wales is Google (yes I prefer Google) giving me US results, and the Store being in USD. It hasn't affected my phone or carrier in any way, and it's been a few months now.

For me the only thing that changed except what nicfromwales said was that when I was making a call it showed like an international call but that was solved by turning off help for international calls in settings... Nothing else...
