Everytime I hold the action button for Cortana, I get an error telling me "Make sure Bluetooth is on and your Band is nearby." I have seen some others report the same issue. Lumia 1520.3 running Cyan.

Same here. It appears everything else is working correctly. Trying cortana gives me the same error. I'm on the 1520cyan as well.
It appears the phones Bluetooth goes on and off... what the heck

1520 user here, I can't get the band to connect either. If I go into Bluetooth settings I can see it constantly connecting and then losing connection.

Same issue with 1020 and dev preview :'(
You can see BT connecting and disconnecting on the phone...never stays connected. Re-pairing and restarting the phone did not help :(

Edit: Somehow I got it to stay on....I noticed that every time I started the Health app it would say I had too many background tasks running. Went and turned off enough for that to stop displaying but it still didn't work.

I then went to the My Microsoft Band section since I noticed it would cause a connection to BT. While there I tried to do a Cortana "note" and it has stayed connected ever since.

Just communicating my experience...don't know what caused it to stay connected. Loving the Cortana integration!

Lumia 635 here, the band pairs with the phone and receives text and calendar alerts from my phone just fine, but won't keep a consistent Bluetooth connection with the phone for Cortana use.

I've turned the phone off and on, deleted the band's connection and re-paired the devices. Still no success, you can literally see the band connect and disconnect after the initial handshake from the Bluetooth menu.

I also can't seem to figure out how to enable email notifications either, but we have to go back to the Microsoft Store anyway tonight to pick up a couple extra things. I'll report back if I find out anything useful about the Cortana issue.

I updated to 8.1 developers preview as the app suggested and Cortana is there along with a few other optional tiles, including notification center, Facebook, twitter, mail, etc. The band actually stays connected and Cortana actually responds, albeit so far it looks like she times out on the band but her answers do come up on the phone.

Moral of the story, for a stable connection, Cortana and additional functionality, make sure your Lumia 1520 is on latest developers preview because unfortunately standard/stock cyan won't cut it

What I found was that it disconnected when there were too many background apps running. I killed one and it stays connected without issue.

Still works perfect without Cyan. Just had to get rid of the "too many background tasks" message when I opened Microsoft Health.

Same problem with Lumia 925 running 8.1 Cyan (without Update 1).
As people have noticed, the Bluetooth doesn't seem to stay connected. It just says "paired" in the Bluetooth settings. Tapping it in the settings makes it shortly go to "connected", but then back to "paired".
Restarts didn't help anything.

I have the Lumia 1520, bought the band at the Microsoft store yesterday and had the Bluetooth toggling on and off issue. They had no clue at the store what was happening and couldn't resolve it. I returned it and decided to wait until the issue was resolved. I'm a novice and don't know how to access/load the 8.1 developers preview. Can someone help me with that so I can give the band another whirl...although I'm sure it's backordered at the store by now.
Thanks.

I have Cortana on my Phone already with 8.1 and Cyan but you are saying I have to go back to that?

Which Lumia model are you using? If it is a 1520:
1.) open the Microsoft Health app.
2.) tap on the watch icon on the top right corner.
3.) tap on Manage Tiles
4.) there should be a button at the top of your screen prompting you to update your phone for the latest updates. do that

If you (or anyone else) are using a different model, it looks like the solution may vary from model to model. Some may be having similar issues even with developers preview

Thanks.

There are instructions provided by the program. It involves downloading an app and signing up. Don't worry, it's really easy. Just look it up.

This was the solution also given by tech support at the Microsoft Store. They said there were updates the phone needed that were only available in dev preview to make the Bluetooth communication with Cortana and any productivity tiles function correctly.

I did the preview update on my phone last night, and this morning Cortana is fully functional as well as all of the productivity apps on my Microsoft Band. :)
