Checked the Microsoft support forums and it appears the recommended procedures for any (post) firmware update problems is to perform a reset, and failing that - to flash the phone using Nokia Recovery Tool.
Took the plunge and the auto-rotate seems to be good now. Everything else (apps) is still restoring and I trust all will be well, based on previous poster's experiences.
Just wanted to put in here that I couldn't find this problem on Microsoft Support pages, but all have a common solution - that some of us have tried successfully.
I had 3 choices when recovering:
I chose to recover from yesterday and all is good.

- From a backup back in October 2014
- Start from a clean slate
I chose to recover from yesterday and all is good.
