Disappointed in WM10 Performance. Anyone else?

Now that we have the final build and I've been running it as my daily driver (for several builds now, actually) I can say that I'm just a little disappointed in the speed of W10M compared to WP8.1.

I'm running it on my Lumia 925, which, to be fair, is an older, slower phone. That still doesn't change the fact that W10M just "feels" significantly slower and laggier (that's a word, right?) than WP8.1 did. It mostly has to do with the fact that all of the features are now broken out as separate apps, each of which takes several moments (or longer) to load when selected. Core applications like email, messaging, and even settings just seem to take seconds to open when selected, and it makes the experience really suffer.

Compare this to WP8.1, where the performance for those basic tasks and navigating the OS wasn't that different on my 925 than it was on my 1520 or even my 520, for that matter. Now I feel like I can grab a cup of coffee in between the time it takes to get a message and then to open the messaging app and then to select and load the message thread.

I would like to know if I'm the only one that is experiencing this, and if I'm the only one who's bothered by it, if not.


P.S. I suppose I should throw Cortana under the bus, as well. Cortana was - far and away - the most useful feature on WP8.1. It really tied the disparate features of the OS together. But, on W10M, I find I barely use it at all. Cortana is A LOT slower, and that's a big part of why I don't use it. Edge almost loads as fast, and most times Cortana opens an edge tab anyway, so I just skip the middle man (woman?) and search in edge whenever its open. Also, it's missing some of the features from WP8.1, most notably the "Local" tab.

I completely agree with you as I am owner of the same phone. (925) It open apps pretty fast if they run on background but If I decide to close them, sometimes it takes even 3 seconds to open it. Nothing close to 8.1 experience. Messaging app is the worst in this. I dont use Cortana, not supported by my region so I dont know about that. At this moment I am doing HR reset and will let you know if it helped boost performance.

Using a L830 here and I can say that win 10 has been better for me than the 8.1 which was constantly freezing while browsing.
what I have found so far that is not working is the blocked number....so doing a second HR to see if it will have better result

Do keep in mind we are using an unoptimized version for our phones. It seems to perform well in the 950s.

The apps do perform poorly on my 640 xl. Makes me wonder if things will be better once we get an optimized version for our models.

It's lacking WM10 optimized firmware, performance will improve once the official release starts rolling out sometime in December.

I don't think the firmware optimizations are going to deliver increased general performance. It will likely produce smoother animations and less "tearing" and similar image artifacts, but generalized performance is what it is. This was the case with all previous Preview operating systems on the Windows Phone platform. This one feels exactly the same, so I have no reason to believe that it will be any different.

No issues at all on my Icon. Everything runs just as fast and smooth as 8.1. I will agree about Cortana though. She used to be great but now just opens edge on almost every search. She is still good for reminders and adding appointments but fairly useless for web searches.

Same here..640xl is very fast and smooth with win8.1(considering the price and specs),but with w10 I'm very disappointed because, when I bought this I couldn't believe it that it was so good with so low price.now I hope that the official release will fix everything...

I agree about the screen animations being smoother, but that it because the hardware uses itself effectively due to the newer drivers. That does improve overall performance including batter.

I just bought a Lumia 640 today at Best Buy for $29. What a freaking awesome deal!!! This is such a nice phone.

W10M runs a thousand times better on this than it did on my L925. I can now say that the performance is really not all that bad. Pretty much on par with what I would expect from WP8.1. Cortana and camera, especially, are notably faster than I was experiencing on the L925. It could have something to do with the fact that I was able to upgrade directly from WP8.1 and then do a reset.

I don't know how Microsoft works internally, but it seams each time a new update fix up something, but also screw up some others( some worked before, but not now with new update). so I was wondering how google lunch a new update for their phone with very few bugs ( without insider preview kind of support), and same does apple's ios. does Microsoft put enough manpower ? or there are other things cause the problem like this? this is my first WP, before I had about 9 google's android devices.

Every OS no matter the platform has bugs and issues and that is a fact, the problem with W10M (as you stated) is that MSs Implementation is poor allowing for fixes but at the same time breaking something else, beginning to look very amateurish in my eyes, got bad enough that sadly I decided to jump ship today as it was getting very tiresome dealing with an infinite boot-loop OS, reset, revert, reinstall, retry, seemingly never ending as of late.

I have an iPhone 6S+ too and iOS 9 was the buggiest system I have seen at lauch. Many small graphical glitches (that are still there in iOS 9.2 beta 4 that I use). The worst bug was a notification bug that took them some time to fix. Every 5'th notification did not make any sound what so ever, from all apps. That's a pretty severe bug if you ask me.

Android 5.0 (Lollipop) when launched had a bad WIFI bug that let it run all the time even though WIFI was off. It also had a memory leak.

My point? Sadly most new OS launches today seems rushed to the public and we all have to act beta testers.

Google also had a beta program. You can install beta software and give feedback so it's no different there or with Apple as well and their public beta program. Even so they launch with many small bugs too. Microsoft is no different. Windows 10 actually feels less buggy in its current state than iOS 9 was at launch or even Android 5.0. The thing that puts me off W10 at the moment is that the battery usage is much higer on my Lumia 1520 while using it. In standby it's great.
