Disk partitioning question - I want to run win10 in a new volume

I'm thinking of playing around with windows 10, but I don't want to mess with my main win 8.1 installation.

What is the preferred method of splitting my main volume in 2. Is the Disk Management utility non destructive, i.e., shrink, then create a new volume from the empty space.

Going that route, is there any issues with installing/running windows 10 from that volume?

That's the route I went, and I've had no issues whatsoever. I'm bouncing back and forth between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 daily.

I partitioned my drive and made a 30GB drive for 10. Everything works great.

Go for it :)

If you have the disk space, I would make a partition around 200GB. That gives you all the room you need to load the W10 and to load any programs to try with the new OS. I did this and glad I did. Some of my friends did less than 50GB partitions and now find themselves space limited.

I actually started with 100GB but filled it too quickly - had to delete the partition and start over again with 500 :)
