do vpn apps work on w10m or is there a fix to make them work

for almost a year now no vpn apps work on my lumia 550 currently at latest build. Creating a vpn profile from the vpn settings always leads to code 789 error when connecting and apps like hotspot shield or hide.me just can't connect as well. There was a fix that I made previously which involved registry tweaks that once worked but after a reset I can't seem to find it again. so any help is appreciated or if a simpler fix exists.

I use VPN Unlimited. You have to copy and paste info whenever you change servers, but it does work. The desktop app is much better, like it does on iOS.

I did try both vpn unlimited and hide me and both either return error code 789 or not connect.

Yes, they work very well depending on the Version of Windows 10 mobile you are using.
I am an insider running release preview builds and they work very well.

I'm on release preview build 10.0.15063.483 , but for maybe a year it hasn't worked for me back on production and previous builds.

I am on the same build.
So maybe you should try hard reset to fix such issues.
And try to find out what that error means from Microsoft.
