Does your Lumia ever show 3G?

My Lumia never displays 3G reception, instead it says I have 4G but my area only has 3G. Occasionally when out in the sticks it'll show an E for edge, and LTE when in places that have it. I just find it odd that it never shows 3G so then I never know if I truly have 4G or just 3G. Anybody else encounter this?

No, it never shows 3G, even if you're in a 3G area. I think that's by (AT&T's) design.

Correct for AT&T. If you turn on the option to change the default radio, you have three options: Edge-Displays E or G, 3G-Displays 4G, and 4G-Displays LTE.

yeah, I'm sure that's why ATT took so long to "test" Tango, so they could make sure the faux-G icon was always on.

Are you on AT&T? None of the now AT&T devices show 3g anymore.

If you leave HSPA+ coverage you will see 3G. Phones that do not support HSPA+ like the iPhone 4 and 3GS also display "3G". I saw 3G on my Lumia one time.

HSPA+ is technically 3G anyway. AT&T is just throwing marketing BS at you every time you look at your signal bars and see 4G; Tmobile does the same thing.

I believe AT&T has upgraded quite a bit of their coverage to HSPDA+ (3G on steroids, aka, "4G"). If you're talking about "real 4G," that's LTE. When you're in those areas instead of seeing 4G you will see LTE. LTE is mainly in major metropolis areas right now.

Yes I have ATT. I thought there was a difference between 4G and LTE, but I haven't kept up with it all. I've been from major cities to the middle of no where, and have never seen "3G" so I believe you guys are correct.

I am with Rogers in Canada. My city does not have LTE yet. Although I set my data to 3G in cellular, I still the 4G icon sometimes. I thought this was weird until I read the info in this thread. Thanks guys.

LTE for me should be coming in the fall. Will keep u posted.

In Tulsa (ATT), displays 4G (which on iphone displays 3G), on travels to Houston i noticed the LTE icon appears.

My lumia 900 which i bought at launch (and i think my old Focus S too) have never displayed 3G

If you've got "Edge" service, you may as well not have any service at all-- reminds me of the days when we had a 1900 bps phone modem.

I'm on Rogers in Canada. My city (Winnipeg) won't have LTE coverage for another few months, but currently I switch between 4G and 3G (presumably HSPA+ and HSPA).
