Downloaded an MP3, can't seem to use it as as ringtone or message tone

Can someone please tell me how to appy an mp3 to a text / alert / ringtone. It works when downloading from a ringtone app but not directly from a website. I have put the MP3 in the Ringtone folder. If I have done something wrong can someone please link me to a place where I can get CAPTAIN CAVEMAAAAAAN as a ringtone. Thanks.

I think you have to use Nokia's ringtone maker (assuming you own a Nokia Lumia)

Just change the Genre of the clip to "Ringtone"...that's always worked for me.
