File Explorer instances disappear periodically

I often open multiple instances of File Explorer while I'm browsing. Every few days almost all of the instances disappear without my doing anything. Then I have to reopen them. This is annoying and a waste of time.

Why does this happen? Can it be prevented?

Short answer, maybe. It's been an issue for a while and there's no one-size-fits-all fix. Just do a search for "windows 10 file explorer crashes" and you'll get several articles about it with a myriad of suggestions. Good luck!
