Firmware Update Released! 2-17-16

Mine installed fine... but some really odd issues immediately after. First detach attempt resulted in the whole thing freezing up as soon as the clipboard was off the base. Re-attached, forced it to reboot. After reboot, locked up on the login screen (stuck at "turning camera on"). Was able to shut down normally & rebooted again. This time it logged me in, but Surface Detach thought the clipboard was still detached. Attempted a detach, which worked, but then the system blue screened with the IRQ not less equal error. Rebooted again but am now afraid to detach the clipboard. Ugh. I'm starting to regret installing this update so soon!

just reboot again; one of the updates failed for me too, it installed fine on next reboot

I have rebooted several times manually with no change. I am not sure what it means that the Surface Management Engine won't start.

what happens when you try to pull updates again? if this was a normal device, i would say delete it, and reboot, it will be reinstalled on next reboot, but since this is Firmware related, i would contact ms support to be on the safe side.

so far my SB is working well, its still early, but sleep mode is working like it should, my laptop didnt overheat in my backpack on the way back home :)

Windows update says that my device is up to date. One time it caught a Defender update, but that's it. I tried uninstalling the drivers in Device manager and restarting but no luck there either. It booted back up and the errored out firmware reappeared. I am out of other ideas other than contacting Microsoft.

Other than that my book still seems to be working, at least as well as it did.

UPDATE: After 5 hours of not cooperating, I was using my book on battery power and restarted and the update sequence started up again. Surprising but the only thing I can figure is that it was NOT plugged in. All good now, though:

After installing the updates my battery drained 3% over 3 hours in sleep and froze during Windows Hello check. Not the best first impression. I lost the same amount of battery while hibernating for almost a day. We'll see how it does over time.

Ok i think everything installed nicely on my SP4, even tho it said something couldn't install after the last reboot.

The question now is: Can we now set it from hybernate to sleep power settings and why are there still no other power plans than balanced. Should i make it again following the WC guide from last year? Also, to what % should i set max processor state, now it is set to 95%, so now maybe we can put it to 100% again?

Thanks

Well, my Surface Book wasn't warm this morning when I took it off the charger, which is a good sign for the sleep power drain issue (usually it's pretty warm in the area where the CPU is in the clipboard). The bad news for me is that I'm having a lot of weird graphical issues in Firefox. There have always been some oddities (right click context menus appearing black or partially black), but now I'm getting black blotches on random web pages and other weird artifacts strewn about in the browser window (sometimes in the title bar area). *sigh*

Weird, my SB shows update history of all four successful, no problems in Device Manager either.
However in Windows Update it still shows the same four as ready to install.

EDIT: now Windows Update shows as updated and everything works great.

The updates installed for me fine, but now my fan goes to 100% speed as soon as I turn on the SB and the CPU stays at the maximum frequency even when I have nothing open. They never go back down to lower speeds. I think Microsoft screwed power management even more with this update.

I'm beginning to regret getting a Surface Book. Should've finally given up and gone with a MacBook Pro, since I already switched to the iPhone last year.

Sounds like your power settings are messed up guy. Try adjusting those, seeing what's running in the background, or simply get a replacement. You'll be surprised at how many things might be specific to potential defects in your device.

I was so excited to install this. Now I am just disappointed.
The Updates installed just fine. I may be getting better battery life I am not sure. But the main two problems that I have had to deal with for what seems like months are still a problem. [i7 256GB]
The click on the track pad has to be almost dead center to detect the click.
The Hello camera doesn't turn on about 5% of the time.
The most annoying thing is how the screen will stay black. Completely off when the computer wakes up from sleep. The only thing I can do is to detach from the clipboard. Then the screen comes back on. But that SUCKS. For years I have been proud to own the Surface Pro 1 Pro 2 Pro 3 and now the Book. But After this I will wait. Microsoft made several mistakes with the Pro 4 and Book. I don't enjoy paying top dollar for a product that is not stable.

Here to report about the latest patch :)
So, after first reboot, the notification panel showed that the device couldn't install some updates. I took a check to history of updates and found one update requires restarting to complete installing. So, manualy restart one more time. The result's booming satisfying so far:
- The surface book runs kinda smoother, but yah, may be just a placebo.
- Pinch and zoom on screen or touchpad now are more responsive. I tested with PTS and MediBang Paint Pro and it feels great!
- Map now shows streets, which mean this update might contains latest driver from Intel HD?

And the best one so far is that I can put my device into sleep through over 12h and lost only 2-3% of battery. I set the device to close the lid to sleep right now. Pretty satisfy with this update.

P.S: Once again, I recommend anyone with a bugged surface book to clean reinstall the device without keeping any data or program.

Hi everybody,

first thanks for the excellent community - I read a lot here and it was my source #1 before purchasing a SB (256/8/nGPU) 2 days ago in Germany (the SB has been launched here this week)

I can confirm: Zero problems. Started the book, got the update immediately, since then NONE of the problems discussed here (and I tried all of them) occured - also the battery is fine after a night of sleep mode. I also have the dock.

So let's hope everything works now and the initial problems are solved.

The only problem I had after the update was the video card driver needed a second reboot. Other then that no issues with the updates. I have the I7, 16 gig of memory with the dgpu. I got it at the beginning of Janurary and I have had no issues with it other then it would lose about 5% of battery over night with it completely off. This was consistent every morning.

When I brought it up this morning the battery showed 100% charged. It will be interesting to see what it does over the weekend as I usually don't use it on the weekends.
