For quite some time I had an issue with Corel PSP X9 crashing over time. Tried various compatibility modes for older Windows versions but those did not work. Run as administrator also did not help.
Since I could not find the solution anywhere on the web I thought I should just post it here:
What does help is right mouse button the psp exe file or shortcut -> properties -> compatibility -> toggle 'Disable fullscreen optimizations' on.
I cannot really explain why this helps, it just does. It is also the only legacy program so far I encountered that needs this checked on.
