For argument sake...

I have had android phones that have received OS updates that really shouldn't have. As bad as I wanted that update, as soon as it was in the phone, it was blatantly obvious the device could not support it. I had to deal with lag and force closing, as well as poor battery life. That is why I get a chuckle when on the android forums and g+ I read posts about people wanting 4.1 on their DROID x when it barely supported 3.5.

I guess my point is that maybe the new OS requires a dual core, or maybe a certain amount of ram, who knows? The only thing I can say is wait and see what is in store for your phones, maybe it will be better than it seems. Personally, I think if they are holding it back there has to be a reason.

I can definitely agree with this. I had an iPhone 4 (8GB) on Verizon that ran iOS5 straight from the factory and you could definitely tell that the phone ran slower than it would have on iOS4 (I know because I swap phones pretty often and did have an iPhone 4 running iOS4). At some point, you just shouldn't update a phone to the most recent OS especially if it will affect the usability of the device. While it may bother you to know that your phone doesn't run the latest and greatest version of the OS, I would rather have my device running as smoothly as possible than stutter over the new features.

good point. But unfortunately that's not how majority of people see it. Like I said, when it comes to general public(outside the confines of forums), the first thing they ask "Does it have the latest OS"? And if the answer is no, boom...there goes your one potential customer.

Just a way of looking at it...IMHO.

Running the latest version of the OS is important for app compatibility. You want to be able to run apps updated for the new version of the OS. That's it, seriously.

Having VoIP integration is all fine and dandy, but absolutely pales in comparison to being able to run WP8 apps on my WP7 devices.

IMO, I don't think the average customer knows what an OS even is. They will ask, "is this that new Nokia with that cool camera" or "hey! aren't those brightly colored ones over there those new Windows phone we saw on that there TV commercial?". I think we -on these forums- are over-informed, regular folks, like my dad or my gf have no clue. Just a thought.

This is a good point. It's hard to realize sometimes that outside of the very small community of folks like ourselves who love this stuff is a vast majority of people who just text and make calls. They could care less about processors, os's, roms, or even features in most cases. Most people just want a phone that looks nice and works.

Basically. And its the one thing the normal consumer would notice too. If you are trying to get an app and it keeps saying it doesn't work then you want a new device. I see it all the time with the old iPod Touches people have that don't run the newer iOS. They notice when they cannot get that game they want now.

Um...firstly I didn't say they know the OS. I said they ask if its the latest OS or not, irrespective of what's its called - hibbi-jibbies 2.0, Bolingbroke 6.7 or Osiris92. Secondly, they are smarter than we think. Though I agree with your point about "isn't this the one on TV"? Bit, the real shift happens at the store... when 3 of his friends are playing with Plastic Sammy, or RiPhone (see what I did there).

So..yeah...its like this: Nokia yes, Lumia may be, Windows Phone...??? Naaah...

Ok cool. I'm just saying if my gf would walk in to a retailer today to buy a phone she would say "I need a phone with a good camera and something with the "Facebooks" on it". She wouldn't ask if it had the latest OS because that would be irrelevant to her as she has barely heard the word before and doesn't know what it means. That's just my gf though, I'm sure there are more tech interested "regular" consumers out there. I see your point though.

Fair enough. The freaks I am surrounded with usually just ask me if its latest, fastest, has the biggest memory and if the hardware is reliable(prone to drops) etc.

But, yes, I think I know what you are saying and yes, there are such people who hardly know the OS name. As you said, we here are over-informed... :D True that.

I'm with the guy you quoted. Most people don't care, they just know I have a huge phone.

Let's say, the next update won't come within 18 months and there is no way you can install a custom ROM.
So, in short, you are stuck with WP8 or 8.5(just like 7.8)...

You are clearly denied an upgrade to the next BIG OS update...

How mad would you be...?

On a scale from 1-10 how mad would I be?

I'd say about a "1"

I don't buy phones in anticipation of major OS updates. I just don't care that much about it. Just like I don't really care about not getting WP8 on my Lumia 900. Getting 7.8 is a pleasant surprise and I'm grateful for that. By the time there is any significant number of "killer apps" that are WP8 only, I'll be eligible for an upgrade anyway.

So you really don't care because you have an update coming? Not because it doesn't really matter?

I'm in almost the same boat. I want the new home screen. But nothing has made me regret my purchase. If they do under the hood fixes, I'm cool.

But I also have a upgrade coming early - mid next year. LOL.

SO what what if I personally wouldnt care. We already know its a possibility because they have already done it once. But I cant see it happening again unless the next os (9) has a shift in kernel again. I dont see that as even a remote possibility. Eitherr boring move on to something wirth more relevance. Like maybe wahts happening with whats still not here yet WP8 !!!!!!

That' not necessarily correct. Remember that WM6.5 and WP7 essentially had the same Kernel, it was implemented differently and made incompatible. The new method of no upgrades from Microsoft as has happened for the last few implementations is something I am sitting back to watch at this point. We'll just have to wait and see. It may become something that is just an accepted fact from Microsoft, or it could just be the stumblings of getting a new OS out to the public and they've finally got their feet under them and will begin to run.
