Gmail - email/contacts/calendar with WP8 - can we update?

Ok. So I have two gmail accounts that I would like to use with my phone. One is a google apps, one a vanilla gmail.

Previously, I'd set up the accounts as exchange accounts and push email + calendar + contacts all worked fine. However, my phone just came back from repair and on restore, those accounts no longer sync. I know google removed sync support on 31.12.13. But I know it continues to work in the old setup for people who got it going before that date.

What options are there for people like me now? (apart from migrating to outlook or MS services)

I just updated to a Lumia Icon and I could no longer setup an exchange sync w/ my gmail (had been continuing to do so on my Lumia 1020). So, looks like it no longer works.

I think your Apps account should be able to still do Exchange though, no? (wasn't that the deal Google claimed?)

I think that might be only for paid Apps accounts...?

Just entering things as a google account in WP8 seems to work fine though - with exception of push mail?
My calendar is VSYSCalendar 365 and that seems to pull everything in OK...
