Has There Been A change To The Windows Phone "Swipe" Keyboard?

It used to be that if I badly swiped the word I wanted and none of the suggestions were correct I could backspace once to erase the word and try again more carefully. In the last few days I now have to backspace repeatedly to erase the word then try again. This is a royal pain in the backside. I've looked at the settings but can see nothing. This is WinPho 8.1.
