Headphones make audio/video default back to Cortana

I have a Nokia Lumia 635 that has been working great since I purchased it a few months back. At night, I like to watch Netflix or listen to music with the Windows App while I go to sleep. Recently, every time I put in my headphones, the phone reverts back to Cortana, then flicks back and forth between music/Netflix and Cortana. I have to restart the show I'm watching on Netflix which is a real hassle. I have even tried turning Cortana off and trying new headphones, but nothing seems to help. Without headphones everything plays great.
