HELP Lumia 920 can't install 8.1 update

I installed the pre-update on my Lumia 920. Downloaded the 8.1 update, it's stuck on the gears. The progress bar doesn't fill at all, the phone just keeps rebooting every 30 seconds. It's been doing this for over 2 hours while plugged in. Soft reset and hard reset does nothing. What do???

your best bet is to use the nokia re-install software. Make sure you backup your phone first and once you've installed to software on your PC just connect the phone and it will do all the rest, easy. Once you have done that you can re apply for the developers preview and get the latest update to that.

How am I supposed to back it up? "Windows phone app for desktop" doesn't show my phone because it's in the middle of an update loop. And may I have the name of the aforementioned software

just go to settings on your phone and select backup, then select backup apps+settings, messages and photos and once that's done you can use the nokia recovery tool. You can't backup games though

I CAN'T do anything on my phone. There is nothing I can do to get out of this update/reboot loop. Unless there is some way of cancelling an update I'm unaware of.

Ahh ok, have you done a hard reset? Your phone should automatically backup it self, and if that doesn't help you can use the recovery tool to get your phone to work again as it has the option to do that.

Tried the recovery tool. Didn't work. How can a simple update screw up my phone so badly

...I got the same error when trying to revert from DP WP8.1 to WP8 in order to get the official update. So I used Nokia Software Updater for Retail. Hope it works for you if you decide to use NSU

It did the same to me, I tried it again and then it installed the software. Just keep trying.

Well, that was frustrating. --- NSU crashes a few seconds after I try to download the new firmware. I thought about what Troy said and tried Nokia Software Recovery Tool again, and it worked. Downloading NSU must have "completed" NSRT's installation or some such. I will attempt to relay this situation to Nokia. :grin:

You don't need to worry, even mine was the same problem, stuck on gears, just check Microsoft site, it has a solution to it!

Have you tried going on the laptop and use the find my phone feature? From there you can send a signal to reset your phone. May be worth a try
