Please don't flame me if this has been posted or asked before, but I have a quick question. I am now using Hotmail for my personal email. By default, the setting to check that mail was every 30 minutes. Setting this to As Items Arrive....what does that do exactly? Is that checking the Hotmail server every second? Will it kill the battery on my Lumia 900? Thanks for any input you can provide.

Setting your email as, "As Items Arrive" will eat up more battery life on any phone regardless of the OS. It really depends on how much you use your phones other functions. It may be ok for you, depending on your usage. Try it. If it eats up too much battery life, just change it.

I normally set my email for every hour.

I believe that the oposite is true. "As items arrive" is the friendly name for DirectPush.

In DirectPush, the phone opens a connection to the server and asks "has my mailbox changed?" The server doesn't respond until there's a change. If the connection is dropped (due to timeout or loss of signal), the phone reestablishes the connection. When the server does detect a change in the mailbox, it replies, which causes the phone do a "pull" of the email.

So, if your mailbox doesn't get mail frequently, "As items arrive" should result in better battery life because the phone won't have to poll the server 24 or 48 times a day. Instead, it mostly sits around waiting for the server to respond.

I could never set it to as items arrive on my other phones, but with wp7 I make it thought the day with it on and dont notice a big hit on my battery. I would recommend trying it out to see how it goes

ManicottiK, you are exactly correct. If you don't get messages more often than every 15 minutes throughout the day, then "as items arrive" is more efficient. All WP phones maintain a constant low power connection to Microsoft servers regardless of email setup.

As it would be, I am actually testing this tonight on my L900 for a "Truth about Push Email" article I am writing. Eight hours with screen off and three accounts set as items arrive. Tomorrow night, the same three accounts will be set to every 2 hours. I will compare the battery drain per hour using the homebrew Battery Meter app. Don't expect any difference. Stay tuned.
