How can I use a monitor, since my screen is shot?

I have an older XPS M1330 Dell laptop running W7? and the screen display is all just complete lines. I have hooked up both types of connectors: #2 video & #5 HDMI with no resolution.

Is there something in the settings that would drive the video output to the monitor instead of the laptop screen?

Once you have hooked it up to an external monitor try pressing FN + F8 - does that get it to output to the connected monitor?
