How Do You Recover From A System Image Backup On A Partition

I partitioned my hard drive on my laptop, segmenting off 150GB for the sole purpose of backing everything up. In the case of an emergency, how would I restore from this backup?
Also, does the backup ever refresh itself or must I manually refresh every now and then? Will a new system image backup replace the old one?
How do I hide the Recovery (R:) drive so it cant be accessed or even seen by anyone except me?
And this is just because I'm curious. Why doesn't File History work with a partitioned hard drive? It doesn't seem to think it exists at all.
