How necessary is a screen protector?

I used to use protection, but not anymore.;) I figure that I will get a new phone in a year anyhow and just don't like the feel or look of a protector. Never had one on my Pre2 and no scratches in one year. However, after having my Trophy for a couple of months, I have one small, light scratch, with no idea where it came from. I can live with it but I don't think the screen is as durable as some phones.

And yes, I do keep it in my left pocket without keys or change, no case.

The Trophy has what feels like flimsy plastic, which is why I use a screen protector. Mostly because I know that if I get even the tiniest scratch, it will drive me crazy until my next upgrade. I can't stand imperfections on the screen but can always replace a screen protector if I need to!

The Trophy has what claims to be Gorilla Glass. However I just got a scratch on mine despite babying it. Same thing happened on my original Droid. I have some screen protectors arriving today. Will see if I can get any of them on satisfactorily, I tried before and couldn't.

Got the device for free + my rebate, so I decided to do m boy a favor and buy the zagg back and front shield.

Normally I don't put anything on my devices.

I'm a fan of the Zagg screen protectors. I've had one on every phones that I've had for the last four years with no issues.

Got ZAGG ad well but only use the shield do backside.

I got a demo unit to try from my vendor. It had been on demos quite a bit. Screen was pristine. I had it for a few months and after all my abuse, the screen was still pristine. I don't know what it's made of off the top of my head, but it seems more durable than my old Blackberry was.

I have a brand new one now and don't really see a need for a case or protector whatsoever.

I don't use a screen protector, and with the exception of one small scratch at the bottom of the screen that really isn't noticeable when the screen is on, my Trophy still looks great.

Gorilla Glass is no guarantee of preventing scratches; I got a long, thin scratch on (thankfully the back side of) my iPhone 4 when I was pulling it out of my pocket while sitting on a swivel chair.

Incidentally, my left front pocket is my "primary" pocket for my smartphone, though because I have two active lines I also carry one in my right front pocket. (I had a bit of a scratch issue, not related to the one above, when I tried carrying both of them in the left front pocket.) I do put my keys in my left front pocket and my wallet in my right front pocket, so I always put the phones in my pockets with the screen side facing toward my leg to minimize possible screen damage.

Does the Trophy actually have gorilla glass? Is this documented somewhere? I'm going to be turning mine in with a defective speaker, and if that is the case I might not put a protector on the new one.

The ones that havent' scratched, how do you handle your phone? I keep mine in my pocket most of the time, and try not to put anything else in that pocket, but sometimes I forget and have some change or something like that in there with it.

I keep screen protectors on all my devices (over 25+ devices over a few years) and every time I don't put one on (whether the device is Gorilla Glass or not), it would scratch and I am ultra careful with them. So I am not going to risk it...well until they have self-healing plastics that will virtually be scratch PROOF and not merely scratch RESISTANT.

I've had my Trophy since release with no screen protector and the screen is still flawless, so I'm kind of surprised to see reports of scratches. The screen seems pretty scratch resistant to me.

I don't really baby it much, just keep it in my pocket with the screen towards my leg. I usually put my wallet in the pocket with the phone. Anything else (keys, change, etc) goes in the other pocket. I may have accidentally thrown some change in with the phone once or twice, but still no damage.
