How to change file type in Win 10?

I had to replace a bad hard drive and reinstall Win 10 OS and other files from a backup. One the files reinstalled was encrypted by Axcrypt. File type for the encrypted file is .axx. However after the reinstall the file type is .pmd therefore Axcrypt give a message the the file is not .aax so it can't decrypt it. I went into DOS and changed the file type but Axcrypt is not fooled.

Also are you saying that one of the backup software's encrypted archive files file extension got changed or the file type? Anyone can change a file extension just by renaming the extension, but that does not always change the file type so that it is usable.

I would be looking more into why that software changed the file type. Seeing if there is a known cause for it and a work around or solution.

By the way I am seeing that .pmd files are page layout files used by the Program PageMaker. Are you sure you are trying to use the right file?

I second this. If the file extension has changed, check to see it isn't a setting somehow from the app you used to encrypt it all in the first place. The file name won't change by itself. Either an app will change it or a user will.
