HTC 8XT Rebooting/Crashing

I was getting so aggravated all day with my 8XT rebooting every 20~ minutes, until I found this thread. I turned off my Wi-Fi while at work in the last half hour I was there, and didn't have another reboot. I turned my Wi-Fi back on when I got home, and haven't gone through another sudden reboot since!

Have an 8XT, too. Turning off Wi-Fi seems to have helped, except it hung a little this morning, I had to wake it up with the camera button, the hit back to get to the lock screen. However, Monday, all day it was restarting, and it seemed to me to be connected, at least in part, to the 3-colum tiles. After I turned those off, it seemed to be doing better, until I saw the Wi-Fi fix online. So, I'm not really sure which one "Fixed" it, could be a combination of both.

Did any of you guys try the extra tile column?

I'm running the 3 column layout, and haven't noticed any issues. For me, it was (and is) 100% all related to wifi. I haven't had 1 reboot or issue since turning it off at work...home (with my network open) again, not 1 problem.

Since this is kinda the defacto 8XT thread about 8.1...how's everyone's battery life? I'm getting between 14-16 hours per charge before battery saver kicks in. That's with no Wi-Fi usage at all, so I've been really thrilled with that.

How's yours?

Just wanted to add my experience on the 8XT as well. I'm also seeing the unresponsive behavior to power-button presses. I finished updating my phone late last night (4/20) and didn't see any issues until later on in the day (4/21). I have been messing around with VPN settings (over WIFI), which in itself also appears to cause reboots if you have failed authentication (Juniper's host checker apparently isn't supported yet, and causes it to always fail, sometimes causing a reboot). Now when ever the phone locks (I'm using a password) I have to either wait 5-10 seconds for the screen to turn on after a single power button press, or I have to do a soft reset. Also, I've had the WIFI sense off and WIFI turned on all day.

To be honest, I'm not all that disappointed (I knew what I was getting into), it's still worth it at this point even with the extra pain of having to reboot/wait.

Turn Wi-Fi completely off, and only use it when connected to an Open access point...lots of us, but not all, have the delay/hang issue on the 8XT when using Wi-Fi and connecting to a security access point.

I've not had 1 freeze or hang since...my battery life jumped up considerably as well.

From my experience with my 8XT, I haven't had too many crashes/reboots, maybe once every two days or so, but I can say my battery life has deminished a whole lot since the update. I have gone in and restricted many of the background apps in hopes that it would help, but I'm still only getting about 8 hours of normal usage out of it :-(. I've also done a hard reset after doing the update.

Hmm...what's Data Sense saying is using your battery so much?

The killers for me initially were email syncing was set to 'As items arrive', which was a change from my 8.0 setting, and the Wi-Fi bug. Oh, and I uninstalled (bing) Weather...

It shows for me that the phone is draining the most, which I did use the phone for about a total of an hour, the readit, which I might have used for about 30 minutes, followed by internet explorer and messaging.

I did change my gmail to sync as items arrive, could that be that big of a change?

Honestly, it was killing my phone, even in 8.0. I switched to a 15 min sync and my battery life went up considerably.

Data Sense might show that....

You're talking about Data Sense and not Battery Saver? In both, they don't really show much at all. All in all about 50 mbs over the past 30 days for 4 different email accounts including the time over wifi.

My battery has been worse than before. I have two email accounts on my phone. On 8.0, I had my Outlook set to "As Items Arrive" and the other to 15 minutes. Once I got 8.1 and found IMAP email could now be made to download "As Items Arrive", I tried that, but that may be what is making my battery worse, so I switched it back to 15 minutes.

Is anyone else having trouble backing up their phone? It gets to about 96% and then tells me there was an error. It still displays my phone having had its last backup a week ago, when 8.1 came out.

Mine shows it successfully backed up 14 hours ago.

Ugh this is frustrating. I originally let my phone sit with Wi-Fi off overnight and turned it back on the next morning, and by some grace of god, it functioned perfectly for the past 5 or 6 days. Secure wi-fi, waking from sleep, no reboots, nothing. I even purposely avoided rebooting the phone just in case. When the audio started getting really squirrely today I finally had to power cycle the phone and now its back to wi-fi failing and crashing/rebooting...

I turned off wi-fi for now but being in a poor service area really makes the inconvenient. Guess I'll leave it overnight again and see what happens

I had the power button issue. After I turned off Wifi Sense I have not experienced the issue. I also increased my screen lock timeout to 3 minutes.

Any better today? I say this not to be smug, but except for wifi, mine has been rock solid, so I hope yours has come around again?
