I decided to contact HTC about the battery.

I have been getting about 6-8 hours use out of my phone with moderate use and experiencing battery drain of 40-50% overnight when the phone is idle.

I have my email said to check every 30 mins and almost all background tasks turned off. I also close all my apps (by pressing the back button until you've only got the home screen left.)

After a week of this I decided to contact HTC via webchat.
After being asked if I've taken any battery saving measures... to which I replied I had, they told me to try a hard reset as the processor can affect the battery. (This didn't make much sense to me.)

I am trying it and will let you know if this yields any results.

Who else has been experiencing battery life issues and what have you been doing to try to solve it?

I suggest you first drain the battery to shutdown. recharge to that you disable location services and make sure that you don't duplicate the MS account with a second Hotmail/Google account that contains the same settings as your primary MS account. Use medium brightness not automatic. Switch off Bluetooth and WiFi when not needed, switch off vibrate and key depress sound.

I tried a hard reset after reading this post and I took my phone off charge 3 hours ago and have been using it quite a bit and its still around 93% when normally even by now it would be a lot lower than that so maybe (hopefully) that was the problem and I might be able to get a proper full days usage out of the phone.

Honestly battery life is my main issue with the 8X or WP8 itself at the moment.

I stick my phone in flight mode overnight that way i know its not pulling data or trying to connect to wifi and adding to battery drain. I only lose between 3% and 5% battery overnight

I've tried the hard reset and drained the battery overnight to condition the battery again (though there are many conflicting ideas on if this works or not).

Hopefully, battery life will improve. I also hope this is a software issue and not a hardware one because I love this phone... apart from the awful battery life.

One thing that i am wondering is if it might improve when third party apps such as whatsapp get updated to properly use the features of the new OS?

Did you turn off: NFC, Location Services? You get longer battery life in 2G or GSM with WiFi off. Did you turn off the automatic sync services?

Yeah I've done all of this. I can't turn off 3G with my phone as I'm on 3 uk and it is a 3G only network.
