Install memory and restore?

SO i plan on buying a memory card for my phone, I already read on which one seems to be the best.
But i REALLY don't want to install everything again and re setup the phone. SO i was wondering if i did a manual back up if i could restore to that point, even though that back up was on the 8gb and not what ever i'm installing...

The "system" did signal it was setting a restore point when I did my OS restore (see my report under my Freshly Focussed post). I figured I'd still lose everything but didnt care because I had entered very little on my new Focus. After my restore and successfully inserting the card, I was surprized to find a couple of calendar entries, but I don't know what else could have been restored. Apps and mail were definitely gone.
