I own a Lumia 640 which I bought around a year ago. From quite sometime I want to buy another one. But from the past 6-7 months , I can't find 640 in any online stores and not even in microsoft retail outlets. Is the phone discontinued? Even the microsoft sales representatives are clueless about the unavailability of this phone.

My impression is that it's been pretty much discontinued everywhere. All you are going to find is someone's unsold inventory if you are lucky.

Why is it so? The phone is pretty much new. And the lumia 730, 830 and 640XL are still available everywhere? So what could be the reason for the discontinuation of this phone? Is it that the 640 has failed in the market?

It is still very much for sale in the USA. In India, I see it listed on Amazon and Flipkart but its out of stock on both places. It's not that this particular phone as failed. Windows phones in general are taking up very low volume in the smartphone market. Which is a good thing for folks who like Windows OS based phones, because we are getting them for pennies! :D

I just bought a 640 @WalMart for $29.99 to use as a spare. They are still available online at WalMart and some stores still have stock left.

its over a year old, and its replacement is already on the market (lumia 650). most likely microsoft stopped manufacturing them awhile ago.

and yes i know lots of people don't consider the 650 an upgrade :)

**edit to add** the last one i bought was a little over a month ago, under the battery cover it showed the manufacture date back in sep 2015 :)

the 650 is already being sold.

im curious, what is the manufacture date of the one you just bought at walmart?
4/30/2015. Is what it says for build/creation date. I can't find a mfg. date. If you can tell me where to look I will.
I just want to add I don't notice much difference from the 640 ips screen and the 735 oled screen. Maybe it's just my older set of eyes.

Under the battery cover on the label between the SIM slot and the SD slot...

Mine was purchased at Walmart as a $30 GoPhone on Feb 20, 2016.

Manufacture date??? Is it mm/dd/yy or dd/mm/yy?

I'm thinking it's DDMMYY. My first 640 shows a date of 140715, so it's not possible to be MMDDYY. My second 640 shows 041215.

I found it there ty RumoredNow. Date is 23/03/16. Presented as dd/mm/yy. So ya they must still be making them.

ATT model from Best Buy maybe a month ago.

05 July 2015 I presume.

050715

Worth noting the 650 launched in April this year I believe.

It would be interesting to see what the sales of the Lumia 640 were like before and after the Nokia write off. I bought mine just before that if I recall and have to admit that as much as I really like the device, I might have thought twice had they announced that before I bought it.

Does the manufacturer date make ANY type of difference?

Well, it started out as supposition based on the OP not finding them anymore in India that the manufacture had stopped. Looks like a distribution thing since they've proven to have been made pretty recently.

I meant in terms of refinements with the device :)

You can still buy Lumia 640 single sealed packed from Ebay India site
its AT&T Gophone and also the price is so less Rs 6200/- only

I purchased it yesterday and completely happy with it... :)
