Is There Any Way For Developers To Use Facial Recognition For The Lock Screen With Front Cameras?

Is it possible for a developer to use the current crop of front facing cameras that are on existing lumias to use facial recognition to bypass the lock screen? or is new hardware required in order to enable that? if it is possible has anything been released of the sort yet?

and i don't think its possible i guess new devices have infra red camera too (?) i guess.
