I recently bought a Lumia 636 to replace my ancient Lumia 900 with WP 7.8. This is a 635 variant sold here in China, with the only significant difference being that the 636 has 1GB of RAM to the 635's 512GB.
I am an American English speaker, here are a few observations:
  • This is a fantastic phone for the money (as low as $130 USD)
  • With the location and region settings set to USA Cortana works as expected, with one strange caveat. When I am using my home WLAN the news feeds, weather, etc. are all shown in English. However when I use my carrier's WiFi they all are shown in Chinese.
  • Here Maps is not really a great app here. There are missing subway lines, etc. It is somewhat functional, but really not great. I may be reduced to using a third party Google maps app.
Overall, this is a great phone to use for a year or so while I wait for Windows10 devices.

I didn't know 636 even existed. I just got my 635. Damnit I need that 1 gig of ram. It makes a huge difference

My understanding is that 1GB allows your to run certain games (as mentioned) and apps (with few apps requiring 1GB). I would expect to see very little improvement in day-to-day usage with the added RAM. Unless you are a phone gamer I'd doubt you'd really notice. If you are a phone gamer 512 may be a deal breaker.

Apart from phone gaming, you'll also be able to multitask faster. So it will make a difference for regular people as well.
