[L640] It's finally here!

I didn't bother to flag an associate down, Walmart associates are hard to find and most of the time useless so I figured I'd just check in now and again to see if they ever get it in.

That's what I do, Friday mornings check to see after dropping the kids off at school, then usually Sunday when I pick up groceries... Always the same, not in, must be on order check in next Friday or Monday.

One of my local Walmart stores had a tag for the 640 today but they had sold out. I'm expecting/hoping that the device will be available very soon! This picture was taken at a Walmart in Kingsport, TN.

Did they actually have some to sell though? This is the second time I have read that a Walmart had sold some but I have yet to hear of an actual Walmart sold Lumia 640 in the Wild. It doesn't mean there aren't any of course. The reason I say this, is I have been looking in local Walmarts where they have the place holders and at one of them the associate at first said they had sold a couple but then retracted it, realizing I guess it was another phone they sold.

So the Lumia 640 has disappeared from the Microsoft Store, where it had been listed as Coming Soon. I am optimistically choosing to interpret this and meaning that the full listing, with price, is imminent!

Last I checked they had it listed as available, but through Cricket. But this makes me hopeful as well.

Oh no :/ I see it as gone too. Wow.

Yawn.... It'll be outdated before it hits the shelves since Walmart doesn't even have it yet.

I bet a lot of customers who bought the 521 as an entry to Windows Phone, will be thinking twice now considering this happened then as well, only not quite to this extent. You know that saying, fool me once...

As many others have noted, the local WalMart near me in Jacksonville, Florida had the rack up with a $99 and some change price tag. The "sales associate" told me there were 3 on order. I wonder if Microsoft is having issues meeting demand, or if AT&T and T-Mobile are bumping heads with Microsoft. I think the latter is the case. From my understanding, once Microsoft gets Windows 10 on the phones, the carriers will no longer have control over the updates. I know for AT&T, they are probably having a fit about it. Perhaps this is optimistic for a Cricket Phone getting updates in the future.

If that's the case then T-Mobile should've kept quiet about it and not mention anything until they had a firm date. I realize that sometimes with the best of intentions dates might be missed, but this definitely doesn't seem like it's the case. I wonder if AT&T and T-Mobile are also trying to pare down existing stocks of the 635 first?

For those who don't want to wait - Expansys has the 640 on sale. Not a huge drop in price, but it helps. I'm using one from Expansys on Cricket - works great!

One caveat for T-mobile customers: Buying the "generic" international unlocked/dual sim version that is on sale through expansys-usa means giving up wifi-calling and most likely VoLTE. Also appears from the band list would be giving up HSPA over AWS band (4)...in case that's a concern in one's particular location (and without VoLTE it might be a fairly big concern actually). Other than that, yeah...a decent alternative for the impatient if somewhat more expensive than what we anticipate the t-mobile version to cost when available.

Wasn't there a firmware update to enable VoLTE and WiFi Calling? Would that work also for the international version on AT&T and TMO (VoLTE) and Wifi calling for TMo or will they block the feature for the international versions of the phone?

I'm assuming that was directed at my post. I was specifically talking about HSPA over band 4. As you can see by the specs you quoted, band 4 is only supported in LTE. Thus, if one's phone doesn't support VoLTE for the provider/market it is being used, there will be no voice service over Band 4...making the only voice service available (for TMO) Band 2 (via HSPA or GSM/Edge depending on local refarming status) which might not give very good coverage depending on location especially after all the refarming (that is tilted in favor of LTE and eliminates HSPA altogether on Band 2 in some places according to various reports) which leaves just a sliver of bandwidth for GSM on band 2 in many markets.. There are a few TMO markets that also run 850, but those are not representative of TMO as a whole across the U.S. AFAIK.

Might or might not be a big deal...just thought I would point it out. If the VoLTE thing (and/or wifi calling) winds up being a "put in a TMO sim and it magically works regardless of actual RM-## of the phone" then awesome...I'm just not going to assume that is the case without actual reports to that effect.

Hi TexasLabRat,

Thanks for your explanation. I ordered the Expansys international dual sim version for my wife and will see how good it works around here.

I wonder if the sim cards will activate provider features, but am not holding my breath.
