Lumia 950XL Dual SIM is going to be useless soon?

Lumia 950XL supports dual SIM, however only one SIM connects to LTE network and another one connects to GSM/Edge. Now ATT is closing 2G network this year and many other country doing the similar. So the phone will not be able to use 2G any more, dual-SIM becomes one SIM.....

AFAIK, both sims run full LTE.

Correct, both slots support LTE. But only 1 can be running LTE at any given time, the other will be restricted to 2G.

But OP is correct, as also indicated in the discussion linked above, once 2G networks are phased out, you won't be able to use that 2nd slot concurrently anyway - it'll still save you from physically swapping SIMs to switch networks, but only one SIM will be available at a time.

Either SIM slot is LTE capable, but only one can be LTE at a time because there is only one LTE radio in the phone, you can't run 2 SIM cards on the same radio unless they run on a different radio (eg. 2G). There is a China variant of the Sony Xperia Z3 which has 2 LTE radios, but still you can only use the other LTE radio only in China which is pointless if you live somewhere else. So technically it is possible, but there would be limitations. As for now, I guess if one SIM slot breaks at least you can still use the other as a backup.

well, that changes EVERYTHING for me. I was under the understanding that two of the LTE sim cards could be run concurrently. Well, not wasting my time on a 950xl then. no point. Guess I will buy a note for work, and just keep my 1020 for personal use.

I have the dual 950XL but only run one sim, how could you potentially use both, at the same time anyway? Can you talk on LTE with sim 1, then what would you do to "potentially" use sim 2 for LTE? (at the same time)

(Edit to add) I read the link above and it seems then that it will not even be able to monitor for incoming calls with this situation, but for those whoe need both sims to always be active hopefully MS will fix it in W10M.

This thread should probably be stickied, imo. Very important info for those of us the are dual sims. I have AT&T in both and am not happy about Edge/2G being repurposed. There are many areas that don't have 3G let alone 4G or LTE. But to kill that off would essentially make my reasoning for buying the phone pointless. And it's not MS's fault. I'm hoping they can find a way to work it out and have the non data sim use 3G.

It works exactly the same way on a Note. At least that's the way it did on my Note5.

So it's NOT a Lumia 950 XL thing. It's a current-phone-design thing.

So how would a phone use 2 SIMS with both on LTE? Wouldn't the apps get confused as to which SIM to use to get the data?

This is how all phones work everywhere. I've never seen a phone in which both operate with >2 G radios at the same time. Thankfully, India is very far off from removing 2G because of (1) feature phones (2) many rural areas having nothing but 2G.

and most of the world too. I would really hate it if 2G was removed, it's so much efficient compared with 3/4G
