So i was eating some pistachios and thought I would try a close up with my new 1020 and my old GS3
[[UPDATE: The whitepages say 6 inches from object, that was not used here with nokia nor S3. See below for retake]]
For the life of me I could not get the Lumia 1020 to focus well, manual or auto (S3 was like beep done, kthxbai) .........I am open to the fact that there may be some proper way to do this with this camera ie lowering ISO (which i tried); but i have yet to figure it out.................and i ate all the pistachios so i cant experiment here anymore :(

Try to get a little further from the subject, and then zoom a little to get the desired macro shot. The 1020 has a min. Focus distance of 10 cm which leads to your inability to shoot the pistachios but with the lossless zoom that's not an issue

someone help me out
i can reframe the first pictures i took
but since the pic with ruler, it will not let me reframe ANY pic i take

UPDATE: Update from Store fixed this issue (hitting find updates from setting menu in procamera app does not)

Sweet! You received your 1020.

I would start with checking if your Pro Camera app has an update available. I updated mine yesterday and I just got a new update this morning. Rebooting the phone might also help.

Did you change the scene to "Close-up" mode?

I did try that too--that is not an option with the procamera mode---but i figured i would try the stock camera app out, which has that option, no bueno

I am going to bet that once this thing is nice to me and lets me reframe the shot from 6 inches it will loook nice--it looks nice on the screen when i reframe it but the darn thing will not save it.

Can you use Pro Camera to change the manual focus? I know third party apps like ProShot allow you to change the manual focus, which will give you what you want.

Added the reframe to post above. not bad, but I still feel the S3 looks better and was able to do it up close, not 6 inches away and no reframing required.
more experimenting to come.

I noticed this when I was in the store, you couldn't focus as close as traditional smart phones for macro shots. Is there a particular reason for this?

On 808 PureView I at least always zoomed in with that lossless zoom and got some pretty amazing macro results. Also remember that you got manual focus.

The 1020 has a larger camera sensor, and large camera sensor can't do the near-focus. It has to be at least 15 cm for 1020.
