Microsoft store extended warranty

For those with the ATT models, Were you able to purchase the service extension from your local Microsoft store? After looking around and being told by store rep chats online and phone number I was denied being able to purchase it. Saying I have to but att's instead, Which doesn't make sense. Its a Microsoft product so why cant I buy warranty from them?
