Mobile connection icons on Lumia 925

I would like a little clarification on all the different mobile data/signal icons that appear in the top left of my device. To my knowledge, the SIM card in my phone is only 3G. However, there are many parts of the city that I travel within, where my phone will often display H, or H+. Does that mean I am actually getting these faster connection speeds on my device? Or does it only mean I am in an area that offers that speed?
