Mobile syrup hands ATIV,8X, 920 hands on

The wild card here happens to be the ATIV S. While the HTC 8X and Lumia 920 bring separate value propositions ? size, build quality, screen for the former; camera, software extras for the latter ? Samsung?s Windows Phone 8 offering seems to be just another smartphone. Yes, it?s beautiful, and the 4.8-inch screen is vivid, but ultimately it?s going to be overshadowed in Rogers? fall lineup.

That's the way I see it. The Ativ really doesn't have any buzz around it.

Well in Europe the 8X is going for like 100-150? less than the 920 (500? vs. 600-650?), I think thats a good price for the 8X seeing that it doesnt even trade all that much away.

I think with the 920 you're mainly paying for PureMotion HD+, super sensitive/responsive touch, and the PureView floating camera. All three are major hardware innovations that you can't get elsewhere.

I hope that HTC and Samsung step it up in their custom apps department. If not, there's a huge discrepancy there too.

The other phones also have their pros over the 920. Both are lighter and thinner so are more pockeatable, 720 means extra row of icons, extra messages in portrait mode, more real state on the browser

HTC has beat audio, a better front facing camera and arguably the better screen.

ATIV has SD card, Bigger screen, Bigger battery, removable battery and the screen has the best blacks.

I would't call Nokia screen a major innovation when the one that saw them side by saw, though the 8X one looked better, the camera is the biggest deal I say.

I do agree on the support part, HTC in particular is abysmal supporting their phones.

I actually quite love the Lumia 900 and 920's design. I'm petite and have small hands, so I normally would opt for a smaller phone, but the 920 is just such a total package that I would get it, regardless of it being big for me. :)

Camera looks different
Speaker grill is bellow instead of next to the camera
Volume button is placed differently
Sleep button is placed differently
ATIV has a camera button
Aluminum and plastic vs Plastic only.

I understand Nokia (and the media) made fun of the ATIV for being just another boring slab. But there's not reason for lying.

ATIV looks great and is a welcome addition.

There is something seriously wrong with your brain. In your comments, you praise HTC as an innovator even when they bring an old feature that just hasn't yet been in WP like Beats Audio, but when we are talking about Nokia you dismiss features they bring to the table like they are not worth even mentioning.

For the last time, that screen has PureMotion, super sensitive touch input and the next generation of adaptive Clear Black technology. That's THREE (3) new technologies not yet seen in ANY other displays out there.

And guess what, one hands-on review ≠ irrevocable truth. Color reproduction is notoriously hard to evaluate outside laboratory settings and is very prone to subjectivity. If you want an another view about the Lumia 920 screen you might consider what Engadget crew had to say about it as they unanimously praised it's quality (particularly the PureMotion feature) and one of those guys uses a HTC One X.

EDIT. Anandtech has reported that HTC One X display has color temperature is on the red side at just under 6000K. Mystery solved.

the X8 is the sharpest looking out of the 3 IMO... big surprise to be honest.

edit: but itshard to ignore that nice big screen on the ativ s :s

But does it look better than Super LCD2? The one that saw them side to side, say it doesn't.

Devices using Super LCD2 came out this year if I recall correctly, is new technology and more importantly new to Windows Phone. I don't know how being on Android first make the technology any less notable on Windows Phone.

Is hard to decide, all of them have their pros and cons. The ATIV S is amazing though, can't go wrong with it.

True.

Both are lighter and thinner so are more pockeatable,
yup

720 means extra row of icons, extra messages in portrait mode, more real state on the browser

This is misleading. 720 means they had to SHRINK down the image so it would fit width-wise on the skinnier screen. This results in about 1/3 of an extra tile, not an extra row of tiles. It also means smaller images for the same display size.

HTC has beat audio, a better front facing camera

True

and arguably the better screen.

It has a comparable screen, which is very good. But it can't compete when it comes to visibility in low light.

Mostly true. Samsung over saturates their colors. So blacks to look awesomely deep. But the trade off is inaccurate color representation. It still looks very nice though, and many prefer it.

The innovation isn't about what may come down to a person's display preference. The innovation is in the BEST visibility in direct light and the unrivaled refresh rate for a phone.

I do agree on the support part, HTC in particular is abysmal supporting their phones.

I have high hopes this will improve. Maybe not to Nokia levels, but at least enough to differentiate themselves with good and useful apps.

I understand Nokia (and the media) made fun of the ATIV for being just another boring slab. But there's not reason for lying.

Lying?

ATIV looks great and is a welcome addition.

I hope it does well. But in order to do so, I hope it is cheaper than the 920.

By Lying I'm referring to metalchick. He said the ATIV S was just a Grey Galaxy S3. Which rub me the wrong way.

You miss the point completely. My point was on the fact that you say things like "I would't call Nokia screen a major innovation" when that's absolutely not true.

You can say that the Super LCD2 screen looks better, I don't care about that, but you can't claim that Lumia 920 screen is not innovative when it has double the refresh rate to any other mobile display and you can use it with your gloves on. While maintaining legibility outdoors.

I'm not a 'he,' I'm a she. The 'chick' part of my name should have given that away.

I never lied, either. I was merely mistaken. There's a difference between someone flat out lying and being mistaken. However, I'm curious - why would the opinion of one person you don't even know rub you the wrong way?

Sorry about mistaken your gender, I hope it didn't offend.
Why wouldn't the opinion of someone I don't know rub me the wrong way? I though it was the wrong thing to say and needed to be corrected. The fact I don't know you makes it better, because it shows there's no harsh feelings behind it.

I'd love to hear what you would deem a 'major innovation' when it comes to displays?

5 inch,1080p, 440ppi Super LCD3 display. A new standard that will no Doubt force manufactures to compare it or pass it.

Yeah, I kinda guessed that you would consider 1080p as a major innovation. Thank you.

Like the change between WVGA to qHD and from qHD to HD. 1080p can be considered a major innovation.

Everyone that saw it, say the difference was noticeable. The ppi is out of this world and is a next generation display.

Take that display away from the J Butterfly and is just a bigger One X. Put that display on it and is something worth talking about. That's a major innovation.

Super-sensitive touch screen, better viewing in sunlight, wireless charging, camera with OIS that blows every other phone camera away... but yeah HTC and Samsung are clearly leading the way in terms of innovation.

*prepares for "it's too big and heavy for me" counter-argument*

Any idea what Anyplace TV Live is?

It's most likely a Rogers app that will allow those that also subscribe to Rogers' cable TV to watch TV on their phone.

LoL

But being able to watch movies without motion blur on a phone isn't major innovation? you think that isn't noticable?

Being able to see a very noticable improvement when viewing in sunlight isn't a major innovation?

Being able to use the phone with gloves on, which is very noticable and will actually make a real change in the everyday lives of people who live in cold areas isn't a major innovation?

But a higher resolution on a very small display (which will likely only be noticable if you're really trying to see it) is a major innovation? The difference between 720p and 1080p on a 22" HDTV is very very small. Do I think it's cool? Yeah.

But when it's on a screen under 5" you're saying it's a bigger deal than the other things I listed above?

It's very hard to believe that you're actually being serious.

Man. just ignore him. If he wants to talk about that stupid Overkill phone. let him. or just put him on ignore list. and winterfang. just because it has high specs does not mean it's innovation. and Winterfang. just because it has high specs. does not mean it's innovation. Nokia can do that. but they want to follow the standard specs. If Nokia made that phone will you respect them. I doubt you will. because of your signature
