impressive review, I was looking into a 925, but now I'm decided to wait a few months to get the 830, hope price will be lower
Apparently it has everything I want: glance, decent battery life, flash, removable cover, IPS screen, expandable storage, nice size, good looks... so yeah

outstanding review, congrats

My complaint so far is I expect more for the battery life. I have not yet able to get more than 15 hours of usage but still better than my 820. Also the Nokia Camera is a bit slow to operate compared to Microsoft Camera. If Nokia Camera is the Denim Camera, I will not use the features because it is not fast enough.

On the battery life, anyone got a comparison with the Lumia 635? Because if it matches that, I'm sold.

choices choices...
if i hadnt read your review, i might have been leaning towards the 930... even with no LTE support in the US
but now im thinking i would like to get the TMo LTE compatible 830 (that would be the RM-985)
anyone else in this boat?
im damn near ready to go with anything to get off this 635 not a bad phone but i want better specs and a front cam

I admire this review (ALOT) I just think that battery performance of all Nokia Lumias are worst when new but later on they (a week or so) they become amazing.

Loved the night shots obviously the bigger aperture agrees with this camera.

Mine just came in today. I can confirm that the edge is aluminum, not plastic. The 730/735 are plastic.

:)
Fred

Good review, but I have one question: the edge is made from aluminum or plastic. I've heard conflicting opinions
PhoneArena said it's plastic youtube.com/watch?v=hkdDZEszKKY
Nokiapoweruser tried to bend it and said it's aluminum frame youtube.com/watch?v=Ps22_SmCOTM

Thanks. So you're saying my battery life will get even better? I'm ok with that

Sorry I missed your question! I see Fred Wilson2 answered it anyway. It is most definitely metal, and a very solid feeling metal at that! Not the kind that bends in your pocket

Just to compare, I had a 930 for less than a week before I sent it back.
It got so hot it was almost uncomfortable to hold if it was used much, such as when I would msg using Viber.
Also when used, it ate the battery shockingly fast.
The screen also had a funky purple hue to it.

The 830, I've only had for a day, however the battery life is soooo much better and it doesn't get hot at all when msging with Viber, which I use a lot.
The screen color is perfect.
It also is much easier to hold, the 930 is kind of slippery and weighs a lot more.
Speed wise, there really isn't much difference.
:)
Fred

Great review, very much appreciated. I'm still torn, though... I don't really care about Glance, so I'm still wondering if I want to shell out the extra bucks and get a 930 instead... By the time I decide they'll have announced a new model and I'll be even more screwed! ;)

Hello asasimo. I just have one question. The 830 uses a Snapdragon 400, and that SOC has a Adreno 305 GPU, right?
The 630 has the same processor and is quite bad at handling heavy games. Is it the same case with the 830?

I'm really not a smartphone gamer so I can't give you an accurate answer unfortunately. But what I can tell you is that having played with the 630 numerous times at local Microsoft Stores, the 830 is clearly smoother. Perhaps the extra RAM and new firmware make the difference? I don't know. But in terms of normal OS and app navigation and usage, there is almost no noticeable difference between my 830 and my 1520. Buttery smooth on both.

On the nokia camera on the 830 does it have the new UI that has the switch to front camera button on screen now instead of digging into the settings?

Hi Hasasimo,
I have read somewhere that denim update does not officially support WhatsApp. Is there any truth in it & are you using WhatsApp? I'm now using a 930 & the only downside is no SD card. 830 has SD card. Also have you tried moving or copying your video clips from phone memory to SD card. AFAIK, all video clips downloaded say via YouTube Downloader are stored in the phone memory. It would be good if you can copy or move it to the SD card as the 830 has a measly 8GB internal phone memory. Seriously thinking of getting the 830 as I don't see any flagship model coming anytime soon. Prior to my 930 I was using the 1520 but just couldn't live with the hefty size. Mind you a damn good phablet it is. Cheers mate & looking forward to your reply soon.

If you want to save YouTube videos to your SD card, use the clipconverter.cc site.

But why would you want to downgrade from a 930 to a 830?

I have a 635 (same as the 630, only with LTE) and though I don't play games, I can tell you the 830 is a lot faster and smoother than the 635. I assume because of the extra RAM mostly.

I sent my 930 back earlier this week. To me, going to the 830 from the 930 was not a downgrade at all.
The 930 was too heavy and very slippery, just awkward to handle. It also got very hot and used the battery quickly when I used some of my msging apps, such as Viber.
The 830 suits all my needs much better than the 930 did. It runs cool, plenty fast enough for what I do, much longer battery life right out of the box, replaceable battery, SD card storage, no funky purple screen bleed, etc.

:)

I use WhatsApp very little, but it seems to work ok, as does Viber which is my main msging app.

OP: Am I getting this right? Your Start Screen downloaded and arranged (Exactly) the way you had it on your other phone? I've always wondered about that.
