Next major windows phone update and what you want in it.

Orginally came here with only 1 or 2 things in mind but after reading some of these, now I want more!

1. My original wants: FLAC & MKV support. I know you won't hear the difference from FLAC & a good MP3, but it's a matter of convenience as a lot of my music collection is in FLAC, and most of my movies/shows are MKV. Would be great if I didn't have to convert them every time I want to put them on my phone.

2. Easy way to close apps - I agree that backspacing endlessly through an app can get a bit tiresome, especially when it seems there is a task manager there (hold back). Why not just put a little cross at the top of each app in the task manager?

3. Separate volume controls - Not a huge hassle for me really, although I tend to forget to turn it back up once I've put the sound down for a game or something, so phone ends up being on silent when I don't want that.

4. App pricing on par with Android/iPhone. Coming from Android it's quite noticable that there's a price jump in the market, and even more noticable that the price is NOT synonymous with quality!

5. Ability to customise live tiles. This may be a bit complex, but if a simple app to make & change live tiles could be made that would make my day. Some of the tiles are so boring, it'd be great if you could spice them up a little yourself!

6. Equaliser to work with wireless headphones. This was an issue with the stock android player as well, but I was able to find a music player that did it (Poweramp). I don't understand the reason for making the equlisers for wired headphones only? Maybe someone could enlighten me?

7. More file system access. I get the feeling some of my disk space is disappearing somewhere, but can't be sure because all I can see are the standard media/documents folders. Mind you, I can definitely see the reason for this, more access could be just as bad!

Edit:
8. Ability to send any files as attachments to email! Didn't come across this till yesterday and it was a right royal pain! This would work nicely with a file manager or something, hint hint.

Other than more apps (not a windows phone 8 feature issue), that's my list. Shouldn't be too hard should it? :P.

LETS FACE IT WINDOWS 8 ON MY NOKIA LUMIA 920:

ALL the hype about being the "smartest" phone made me buy it but I was totally disappointed - many many many many "BASIC" and I am saying BASIC best of practices are missing in that phone and I cannot believe it. Look at Android and the things they've got to offer. People Hub and sharing sucks on Windows mobile sometimes you don't have all the options, look at the options you get on ANDROID when you share something, you will get a super long list of everything! Tell me whether I am right or wrong!!!!

The way an app opens up and closes with these dots acting as loaders is SUPER ANNOYING. The pagination animation is very very annoying.... They should keep it simple with a simpler loader.

I cannot MUTE the phone properly whenever I want!!!!!

No proper vibrate option

The notification on top when I get a message from whatsapp, for example, doesn't have a way to dismiss it and it hides the top area of my phone whereas I have to wait for it to disappear.

There phone practice is BAD I have a hard time looking up contacts and copy/paste numbers the whole thing is a joke.

There is no AIRPLANE mode

I can go on and on.. One thing for sure, in this era, in this century, in this day: THIS IS NOT A SMART PHONE.

To get rid of the toast notification on top you should be able to swipe to the right and it will go away. airplane mode is accessed through settings. Maybe if you would take the time to read the quick styart and look at the getting started videos and tips and tyricks in the WPC articles andf forums or even bother to look at the user guide in pdf format you might have a better idea of what your smartphone can do. I download and print the user guide each time I change phones That way I can highlight or mark stuff fort when I have questions or need to try to help people. RTFM

Now that I have the time to think of something, a restricted file system.
You can only access your documents, photos, music and videos on internal storage.
Everything your phone supports (i.e. Files you can open) on the microSD card is accessible, folder structure and all.

One and only demand- Remove current Sandbox and add WindowsRT's Sandbox to WP. That's it,almost all problems will be solved.

You can install some basic tools like shortcut or battery applications and pin it to the start menu to have a quick access to the flight mode 2g,3g .....

1) X Button On Multitasking
2) Independent volume profiles
3)Better Music and Video Player
4) More Video format support on the default video player
6)Ability to send songs, video, etc without having to turn on the bluetooth first
7)Faster Phone Start Up
8)Better voice control (should be on par with Google Voice or Siri)
9)Brightness Slider
10)Notification Center
11)Rotation Lock
12)Universal Search
13)File Manager
14)Live tile should update every 5 minutes of so unlike the current 30 minutes
15) Do Not Disturb (Like iOS)
16)Bring Back Zune for syncing music/video .... Woooo LONG LIST !!!!! :-)

Zune synching w0uld be a good thing.

Biggie (probably somewhere in here already) - ability to store apps on SD card instead of in phone's memory (strange, my Windows Mobile 6.5 had no problem doing this).

I understand FM radio is coming (for the 521?). How about FM-HD like in my Zune HD mp3 player?

X button would be good too - it takes me many iterations of pushing the back button to close out the web browser.

How about the ability to designate a web site as the home page for Internet Explorer (if there's a way to do this, I haven't found it).

Here are my absolute biggies:

  • Notification center: I rely on Twitter for traffic alerts before I go to work. Hate having to load this up manually.
  • An official MS eBook reader app a la iBooks. The Reader app needs to go beyond PDFs. It needs to support epub with book marking, highlights and note taking. The current crop of eBook apps are buggy or incomplete. Or at least make the Nook app the official eBook reader with epub sideload support.
  • Different alert tones for different e-mail accounts. All e-mail accounts aren't created equal. My work e-mail needs to sound different from my personal account. I need to know whether to ignore an e-mail or not.
  • Don't let me just link e-mail accounts, let me just link individual folders. My work e-mail relies on rules to move important messages to specific folders. I don't want to have to pin 10 folders to the home screen. Just let me link them to one inbox. Thanks.
  • Sleep Mode: Do not Disturb is such an awesome feature of iOS--please don't have any shame copying it. I hate having to manually set this. You can take this to the next level by allowing me to set this feature in the Calendar. I have weekly meetings at a certain time. It would be cool if my phone went in Sleep Mode during this time. This would avoid embarrassing moments in the middle of a presentation because I forgot to silence my phone. This should be a check box in the calendar app.

Few on my wishlist. Some, if not all may already be part of this thread. so bear with me -

1. Notification center- But I just dont want plain one after the other in a sequence. I want them grouped and collapsed view. for example -
Skype: 2 missed calls, 5 chat
IM: 5 messages
Whats app: 4 messages etc.
When I click on the group, I see all the missed notifications in the group of interest. This makes for a clutter free notification center. That way, I can jump straight to whats important to me at that point in time.
2. When I click on a toast notification, currently I can only view that info. for example, i get a new notification from wpcentral about a new article/news. I click on the notification. It takes me to that article/news piece. But from there, I cant navigate to any other part of the app - for example, app home/other articles etc. instead, I just have to close that and open the same app again. Am I missing something? Or is this something thats genuinely missing in WP?
3. Multi tasking that actually works - accidentally hitting the back button closes to current. And this is particularly painful when looking up contacts, and dial their numbers - contacts page takes up as one open app, dialing page takes up another - why? 3 to 4 clicks later, you notice that all 5 allowed background are filled with contact pages.
4. Local scout that actually lists listings better. So many times I have stood in front of a restaurant and the local scout does not even recognize where I'm and eat-drink page doesnt list it. I dont think its the location recognition issue. I think the listings are not exhaustive.
6. Expanding on the above point, lot of times, location service doesn't instantaneously recognize where I'm. I travel a lot on business on a weekly basis. but the phone just doesnt recognize where I'm until I hit "current location".
7. different alert system for different email accounts and different apps is a must. lot of people have asked for this. so no need to repeat, expect, saying that this is a must.
Also, different volume settings for headphones/music/ringer/call volume.
8. When I create a contact group on phone, the group info is not synced to skydrive or vice versa.
9. Always show the top info bar all the time. Do not auto-hide. Also include the battery percent. I dont need a dumb app to show me how much percent battery is left. Can you imagine if you are in the middle of a call and it feels like the call quality is low, first thing you check is the network connectivity. now i have to tap the top of the screen to check if I have a cell signal. It becomes increasingly painful if OEMs come up with larger screen devices.
10. Universal search.

Am I asking for too much?

I have a humble desire in the next update.

For the love of god, when using a bluetooth earpiece for receiving calls, plz microsoft let us use the earpiece WITHOUT sending all sounds (voise, music, system sounds) at the earpiece....in Android there is a menu to use the earpiece as only voice or voice and multimedia.

To better understand what i mean, if you have a BT earpiece connected, your phones speaker will not play any new messages when sms or email arrive nor will play lock and unlock sounds.

I would like the option to swipe from the start screen to quick settings, notify center, and like a list of 5 most recent contacts.

A better theme color picker like RGB or the color circle/slider. Also, a way to apply a skin or theme to the tiles, so they could look 3D, or have tiger stripes, etc.

Live tiles that update often (Weave is pretty good) and have reactive features, like, maybe on the double wide Messaging tile it scrolls through your 5 most recent texts and if you tap a little icon you can quick reply.

These are really Android-like suggestions, but would really enhance a promising OS.

Pretty simply - to effectively use it for business I need to be able to attached a native PDF. For the love of God how can Microsoft overlook such a basic function as being able to attach a PDF to an email.

Why not give the possibility to attach any file from local or cloud storage, like other platforms???!!!

  • Notification center
  • rSAP (Remote SIM) Bluetooth profile
  • Orientation Lock
