Nokia Lumia 1020 only stays connected to wifi when plugged in.

My new Lumia 1020 was connected to wifi when I began setting it up. I got a data usage warning message the next day, so I made sure it was still connected to wifi - then I got another warning message advising me more charges were being applied to the data plan. I called ATT and explained and was told that the 4GLTE runs all kinds of stuff in the background that uses data and to turn the data off. I did - since then, no more data usage - however - it will not stay connected to wifi after a time out unless it is plugged in. It still shows that its connected to wifi but its not. I have to turn off wifi and turn it back on to reconnect every time - unless its plugged in.

Under the WiFi click advanced and make sure stay connected while sleep is on.

yes, that has always been checked. thank you. Its defective - I sent it back and am waiting for the new one to arrive.
